Getting a new mattress doesn’t have to be stressful if you know what you want. There are so many products on the market that people give up on searching for the one that would fit them perfectly. Instead, they simply go for the first decent option, or in most cases the cheapest one. While a price of the mattress is an okay indicator of its quality, there are brands and models you can get for a lot less money, that can provide the same, if not better quality and performance. In this article, we reviewed two mattress models with below average price, Casper and GhostBed. Both mattresses fall in the same category of medium firmness, and here we’ll discuss their strengths and weaknesses.

Casper vs. GhostBed – Basic Info

Casper mattress has been around since 2014. Their signature mattress, the Casper, is constructed of high-density polyfoam layer, and comfort layers made out of polyfoam and memory foam. It is considered medium when it comes to firmness, and it’s rated 5.5 out of 10 on a firmness scale. The brand also offers two more mattresses: a memory foam one called the Casper Essential, and a hybrid made out of memory foam and latex called the Casper Wave.

GhostBed has been in business since 2015. The signature GhostBed has a high-density polyfoam base, and comfort layers made out of gel memory foam and synthetic Dunlop latex. GhostBed is considered medium firm, with a rating of 6, which makes it slightly more sturdy than the Casper, but most users won’t be able to notice this difference.

Keep in mind that this guide compares only the Casper and the GhostBed models, but if you want to find out more about other products by these manufacturers, you can check our other guides.

Casper’s medium firmness and close conforming also come at a reasonable price. This model is a perfect fit for people who often experience pains and aches in their hips, lower back, shoulder, and neck. Close conforming relieves pressure and pain, so the users have reported better sleep after using this model. The Casper mattress is pretty much silent when bearing weight, and it also provides great motion isolation, making it an ideal choice for couples. If you or your partner are easily woken up by each other during the night, you should consider this model. Minor drawbacks are that some users have reported off-gassing with a new mattress. The edge support could also potentially be a problem, as the mattress might sink a bit over time. The brand hasn’t been on the market long enough to form a definite opinion about the durability, but it looks promising.

GhostBed is excellent for people who prefer a bit sturdier medium firmness mattress. It comes at a great price, and it is cheaper than most beds on the market. We found GhostBed performing nicely in every possible category. It conforms well and provides good support. Motion isolation is excellent, and it makes no noise when bearing weight, so it is a natural choice for couples. It is crucial to mention that GhostBed emits no odor, which is rare for foam mattresses. Company has only been around for a little while, but the indications are that the durability of their products is above the average. Latex mattresses are usually cooler and suitable for hot sleepers, but it looks like the effect of a latex top-layer is not enough to cancel the warming effects of memory foam, so the GhostBed’s rating when it comes to temperature neutrality is “only” good.

Mattress Construction

The way that mattress is built impacts how comfortable and durable it is. Mattress material directly affects the quality of sleep.

The Casper mattress has excellent support thanks to the high-density polyfoam base that creates an even sleeping surface with good reinforcement. Comfort system is made from top and bottom polyfoam layer, with memory foam in between. It provides close conforming and medium firmness that helps with spine alignment, and it is good at alleviating pains and aches in the body. With a 9 ½” thick profile, the mattress is a bit thinner than the average one. Weighing only 71 pounds, it is lighter than most mattresses, which makes it easy for moving and manipulation, and you don’t need additional help.

The GhostBed has an 11” thick profile, with 7 ½” HD polyfoam, which gives the mattress excellent support. Comfort layers contain Dunlop latex and gel memory foam, and they offer medium firmness and close conforming, but a little less than the Casper. Latex and gel memory foam layers are supposed to provide temperature neutrality, which they do in the most part, so this model is suitable for those people who tend to sleep hot at night. Because of latex, GhostBed weighs more than an average queen size bed, as it is 89 pounds. That is not a problem for most people, but some might need a hand moving or handling it.

Available Sizes and Pricing

Both models are available in all six standard sizes, and the price varies depending on which one you are interested in.

SIZE CASPER GHOSTBED
Twin $695 $445
Twin XL $745 $620
Full/Double $1,050 $770
Queen $1,195 $795
King $1,495 $975
California King $1,495 $995

Sleep Position Ratings

Sleeping position preference impacts the personal feel of every mattress. We have rated both beds based on the sleeping position and sleeper’s weight. One study found that sleeping on the side is the most common in adults, while another one found that perceiving back pain depended on the sleeping position in physically active seniors.

The Casper’s medium firmness provides perfect support and conforming for average weight individuals, but those who weigh less than 130 pounds will find it suitable as well. It is the best option for sleeping on the side or the back, but stomach sleepers will find it reasonably comfortable as well. Due to the terrific motion isolation and no production of noise, it is a perfect choice for couples, especially those who are easily woken up by their partner.

The GhostBed’s medium firmness makes it optimal for those who weigh over 130 pounds. Heavier individuals will find it suitable as well, but lighter individuals might find it not conforming enough and too firm. However, that is all subjective, and most lightweight users will find it more than adequate. It makes no noise and isolates motion well, making it perfect for couples. The GhostBed performed well for all sleepers, no matter the sleep position. It is also somewhat cooler than foam mattresses, so if you are a hot sleeper, consider this model.

Which One To Choose?

Casper offers a 100 night trial period, during which you can return it at any point if you are not satisfied, and you’ll get a full refund. Keep in mind that this is only valid if you by directly from Casper and not from Amazon or some other third party. Casper offers free shipping anywhere in the US and Canada. They also provide removal of an old mattress upon delivering for a flat rate of $149. They also offer a 10-year warranty on their products.

GhostBed offers a 101 night trial period, but you must keep it for at least 30 days before returning it for a full refund. The repairments during the first ten years of warranty are free of charge. After that, the repairmen fee increases by 5% for every year of ownership. They deliver to all 50 states, and while shipping is mostly free, delivery to Alaska or Hawaii comes at a flat fee of $600.

You should go for the Casper if you weigh less than 230 pounds, and prefer medium firm models with close body conforming. It is excellent for couples and people who prefer lower profile beds. It might not be the best option if you prefer firmer foundations, or you are over 230 pounds. It will still do a good job, but there are better options for you if that’s the case.

GhostBEd is an excellent choice if you prefer a medium firm feel with moderate conforming. It is best suited for people who are over 130 pounds, and who like higher profile beds. It is also a great choice if you or your partner easily wake up due to movement or noise. Moderately hot sleepers should find it suitable for sleeping a little cooler. It might not be the best option for you if you like soft mattresses that conform closely, or you are under 130 pounds.

Consider all your needs, and see how they compare to what these two models have to offer. Studies have shown that new bedding system could help you achieve a better night sleep, so we hope that this guide helped you decide on getting a new mattress a little easier.
