Standard and Non-Standard Dimensions

In the chart above, we inserted standard dimensions for king and queen mattress size. Those sizes, as well as everything you may need for them, bed frames, bed sheets, etc can be easily found. However, you can also bump into non-standard king and queen models, and that may cause you more troubles than you think. So, do not ever presume that every queen and king come in their standard and widely known size, because you may be unpleasantly surprised when you find out that it does not fit your room or bed frame. Always check the details and measure your own bed to see will it fit.

Here is the list of some most common non-standard king and queen dimensions:

  • California queen – you will rarely find this model nowadays, but it is not impossible, California queen is four inches longer than the standard queen, and it is used for water beds.
  • Split queen – this is a standard queen size that is split in the middle, it basically consists out of two mattresses which can be moved or combined, depending on the needs, both are 30 x 80 inches.
  • Olympic queen – also known as expanded queen, is 6 inches wider than the standard queen, and it measures 66 x 80 inches.
  • California king – also known as western king, is the most common model of all non-standard ones, so common that has earned its place among other standard sizes. It is a bit narrower and longer than the standard king, measuring 72 x 84 inches.
  • Split king – the principle is the same as with split queen; however, they can often be 2 inches wider than standard. Each half measures 39 x 80 inches.

King Mattress – Pros & Cons

King sized mattresses were introduced in the 40s when it was usual to combine two twin beds and represent them as one large bed. Later in the 50s king gained its popularity and became famous as the best option for master bedroom.

King is the largest standard size that is available, many often make a mistake and think that California king is the largest, but that is not the case. California king bed is 72 x 84 inches, which means that it covers 6,048 square inches, while the dimensions of a regular king models are 76 x 80 inches, and it covers 6,080 square inches, which makes it the largest bed on the market.

Here are some of the advantages of a king size mattress:

  • A king-size model has a broader sleeping area, which makes it perfect for couples who like to have some extra space in their bed. It is also very convenient for couples who have a small child or own a pet who occasionally likes to share a bed with them.
  • King size bed is equal to the size of two twin XL beds placed side to side.
  • If you are into aesthetics, you are going to love the shape of king-size beds because they almost form a perfect square, and that is why they fit in so nicely into every bedroom.
  • King size is widely available, just like the queen size, pretty much every model of a mattress is produced in that size.

Disadvantages of a king size mattress:

  • King and California king models are the most expensive sizes of beds, they usually have the same price, or the California king is slightly more expensive. However, in comparison to the queen size, the king is definitely pricier.
  • Kings take quite some space, so if you want a king bed, you will need a bedroom that is at least 11 feet wide and long. Even this might not be enough because it leaves little to no space for other things in the bedroom.
  • Due to their size, kings are more massive than average beds. They can weight from 110 to 140 pounds, so it can be hard to move them around the house without additional help.

Queen Mattress – Pros & Cons

Queen size beds are a standard in the bed industry, and most of the brands use queen size models for their advertising. They are today so popular among sleepers that they make around 40% of all mattress sales. Standard queen is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, so one size smaller than the king, and one size larger than the full-size beds.

The queen size was introduced during the 40s and 50s together with the king size. However, in 1999 the queen beds became the most popular size in America, for the first time ever, by beating the twin size. Being 16 inches more narrow than the king, and 6 inches wider than the full, made the queen size the perfect size for those who are looking for the comfort of a king size bed, but their room is not big enough to accommodate it.

Advantages of a queen size mattress:

  • First and the biggest advantage is the amount of space that it takes. Queen mattress requires less space than the king since it can fit into any room which is at least 11 feet long and 9 feet wide, leaving enough space around it for other stuff.
  • Price point depends on the manufacturer, but in general, queens can be significantly cheaper than the king beds. A queen can be found for 100$ to 500$ less than the king size of the same model. The average price for a queen is usually from 800$ to 1200$, but the price depends on the mattress materials, manufacturer, brand, etc. Also, additional things such as bed frame and linens are more affordable for queen size models than for the king.
  • Queen is also lighter, with average weight from 80 to 100 pounds, and it is easier to move it around the house if you are doing some room rearrangements.
  • Queen size is the “safe” size option for most sleepers because they cannot go wrong with this bed. It comes with a broader and longer sleep surface than the full or twin xl mattresses, but it will not take so much space as king and California king models. You will get a proper bed for adults, and it will not cover every inch of your bedroom. Also, it is widely available since every model that is produced is also available in queen size.

Disadvantages of a queen size mattress:

  • Queen is narrower than the king, which can bother some couples who like to have more personal space on the bed. Also, those who have children or pets that often sleep with them may find queen size a bit too small for their needs.
  • If you have a larger bedroom, a queen sized bed may seem too small with so much space around it, and it would not appear so aesthetically pleasing as it would in a smaller room.
  • Taller people can struggle with the size of a queen bed, so if you are taller than 6 feet and 4 inches, the queen will be too small for you. Don’t neglect your body features when choosing a bed.

Tips For Choosing The Right Mattress

The difference between a queen and king can seem insignificant at first, but the more you think about it, the more you will hesitate when you start weighing their pros and cons. Here are some things you should consider when opting between a king and a queen size bed:

Sleep position

Depending on the preferred sleep position, your body will take a different amount of space. If you like to sleep on your back, you will need more space than a side sleeper, and if your bed partner is also a back or stomach sleeper, you two will need a bigger model.

Shopping budget

Investing and spending a bit more in a quality bed is never a mistake; however, there is no need to break the bank for a bed because there are plenty of affordable models. Do your research or be patient and wait for some exclusive offers, sales, and discount coupons.

Bedroom space

Measure your room and see how much can fit in, there is no point in pushing in the king size bed if you are not going to be able to move around it. The somewhat universal rule is that you need at least 2 feet (61 cm) around three sides of the bed, but if you plan to furnish your room, you will probably need a lot more. If you are renting a place, and you will most likely have to move at some point, take that into consideration too, because kings can be heavy to move and transport. Also, think about the corridors and stairs in your building or house.

Body type

If you are single, you have the luxury of having the entire bed for yourself, and you will probably be okay with both sizes regardless of your weight. However, for couples who are more on the heavier side, queen sized bed might be too tight, and they should consider opting for the king size if possible. Also, taller people will probably find queen size too short.

Kids and pets

Occasional sleepover guests such as kids and pets can suddenly turn your spacious bed into a surface too small for the entire crew. If you like to snuggle in bed with your kids on weekend mornings, think about the king or California king models.

The Verdict

The difference in size between these two models can be negligible for some, while for others it can play a significant role. The truth is that both beds are large enough and the choice depends on personal needs, preferences and available space.

Queen will definitely suit all single sleepers, while some couples and families may need extra space and comfort that a king size can offer. However, if your bedroom is not big enough, then you do not have much choice.

If you are still unsure, we recommended checking both sizes in store, or if you are into online-only mattress brands, you can use the free trial period which nowadays almost every company offers. If it is suitable for your needs, great, if not, you can return it without any costs. That way you will be sure that you made the right decision.

In this guide, we will compare twin and twin XL sizes – two of the smallest sizes. The twin bed size is one of the most popular options today – it’s only rival is the queen mattress. The twin extra large bed size packs a big punch in a small frame, with more room for the person to stretch out while being able to fit in a smaller place.

Selecting the appropriate mattress size can be a challenge. There are several aspects to take into account such as the number of individuals using it, sleeping positions, financial plans, and the dimensions of the room where it will be placed. Currently, mattresses are available in six different sizes: queen, king, California king, full/double, twin, and twin extra large (XL). Additionally, some brands provide custom-sized options for their models.

The twin and twin XL sizes have some similarities, but also some differences. Standard twin size or single bed is one of the smallest sizes you can buy.  Do not mix up twin beds and double beds. Twin size is made for one person with thirty-nine inches in width and seventy-five inches in length, while the double bed refers to the number of people sleeping in it – two adults. Since it doesn’t take much space, this bed size is suitable for small rooms, for example, kids’ bedrooms and guest rooms. And you can quickly turn it into a bunk bed.

Twin extra long size is the same size as the standard twin size – thirty-nine inches in width and eighty inches in length, making it only five inches longer than a twin bed. The twin XL is equal to one-half of a regular King-size mattress. It is suitable for adults and children. Commonly they can be found in nursing homes, hospitals, other healthcare institutions, and college dorms. Even though it is wider than the standard twin size, it doesn’t provide enough space for two people to fit.

The standard width of a twin size bed is 38 inches for both beds, while the standard lengths are 75 inches for twin and 80 inches for a twin XL. The minimum bedroom size for twin is 7 1/6′ x 10 1/4′ and 7 1/6′ x 10 2/3′ for twin XL. The prices are also very different – $300 to $600 for twin and  $500 to $750 for twin XL. Both models are less expensive than the Full or Queen size mattresses, making them excellent options if you have a tight budget or want to save money. As for ideal sleeping arrangements, single sleepers that are not taller than 6’2″ or do not need any extra sleeping space will find twin size perfect, while tall single sleepers that also don’t need any extra sleeping space might prefer twin XL.

Benefits of Twin Size Beds

They require less space. Because it is shorter than a twin extra large size, it is an excellent option for shorter rooms. This bed size can fit into a room of 2925 square inches. The price is affordable, from $300 to $600 on average, which is $100 to $200 cheaper than twin extra large models. However, in some cases twin and twin XL mattresses have the same price. Because they are small in size, it is very lightweight and can be moved easily, without any assistance. And they have wide availability. Most models you can find on the market are available in a twin-size model, but thicker models may not have this size as an option. Additionally, these bed sizes are very kid-friendly. They can easily fit in most bunk beds and standalone beds for young children.

Drawbacks of Twin Size Beds

They have many benefits, but there are also drawbacks. The twin size models are short and too narrow for some individuals. It does not have much additional space in width, and it has five inches less in length than a twin XL. If you do not need any additional sleeping space, then this could be a great option. But if you are tall or just need some extra space, this might not be a good option. It is also not a suitable option for couples because of the narrow space.

Benefits of Twin XL Size Beds

A twin extra large can fit anyone under 6’8″, which includes individuals that are taller than the standard twin-size models can fit – somewhere between 6’3″ and 6’7″. Even though they have more weight than a standard twin, they are still relatively lightweight and easy to move. And just like standard twin sizes, they are also suitable for children that sleep in standalone bed frames and bunk beds.

Drawbacks of Twin XL Size Beds

A twin extra large is a bit bigger, so it can’t be put in shorter bedrooms. The bedroom needs to be more significant to hold a standard twin. This bed size can fit into a room of 3120 square inches. The price is also different for a twin XL mattress. While they offer more space in length, they are still the same width as a standard twin. Both sizes have thirty-eight inches in width, which is not ideal for individuals that need extra space. Because of that, they are also not a good option for couples. The bed size is too narrow, making it convenient for single sleepers only. And they usually cost at least $50 more than a standard twin. However, there are some cases where the price can be the same.

Which Size Right for You?

Even though it may seem like these bed sizes are not so different, the additional five inches of length can make a difference, especially for taller individuals. Both sizes are the same in width, so the length is the only difference in dimensions. Because of the small size, both models are more suitable for individuals that sleep alone. If you want to sleep with another person, buying a double size mattress would be a better option, because the twin size is too tight for more than one individual.

You need to consider your body type as well. Both sizes are the same width, so the height is the only difference. Shorter individuals will not need the added five inches of a twin extra large bed provides. But taller individuals will need that difference. When shopping for a child or even teenager, you need to consider that they can outgrow a regular twin mattress, so it might be best to get them a twin XL. Both twin sizes are made suitable for children’s standalone beds and bunk beds. The independent beds are a perfect option for your child to sleep in after a crib mattress, but keep in mind that the extra five inches might be needed for a growing child.

Many people do not share their beds with another adult, but many have younger children or even pets that jump into their bed. If your furry friends like sleeping with you, a twin XL will offer you an additional length that will allow your pet to sleep at your feet. If your children sleep with you, it is not recommended to get a twin size, but instead a bigger bed.

Your sleeping position can also affect the size of bed you need. People that move around a lot in bed or just stretch their legs out might want to choose a twin extra large that will give more length for any movement. This is extremely important for individuals that sleep on their back or in a lengthened and narrow position. People that like to curl up and sleep in a fetal position will find that the twin mattress feels the same as the twin XL. It would be best to try out both the twin and twin extra large mattress sizes to see which one feels best for you.

The twin size is the smallest size you can find, and the twin extra large is right after it with its added five inches. Since they are both small, they can fit into any standard room size. And because many bedrooms are big enough for two twin or twin XL mattresses, you can easily get another bed for any additional sleepers.

As for prices, both models are the cheapest among mattress sizes. If you need to save more money, it would be best to get a twin bed rather than a twin XL. Apart from the mattress being cheaper, sheets, duvet covers, bed frames, and protectors will also be more affordable. Individuals that do need any added space, a twin mattress is definitely an excellent choice.

Conclusion

This guide examined the standard twin and twin extra large bed sizes. Both the standard twin and twin extra large have similar dimensions, but the difference is in length and price. A twin will fit anyone shorter than 6’2″, while extra large will fit anyone shorter than 6’7″.

A twin size bed will be a great fit for a child. The twin-sized beds are convenient for children’s standalone and bunk beds for kids ages from 3 to 13 years. Additionally, a twin size is a great option if you are shopping for a new mattress with a tight budget. A twin extra large size is great for adults that plan to sleep alone. They have the same length as the Queen and King beds, but they are more narrow than other bed sizes, so they are a better fit for a single adult or tall child. If your child is under 13 years old, a standard twin size is a great option. However, if you have tall genes in your family and expect your child to be tall, he or she may outgrow the regular model, so a twin extra large would be a better option in this case.

If you are living on a smaller budget with one twin extra large bed, but have a partner or just want to expand your sleeping surface, it might be cheaper to buy another twin extra large bed than to get a King size bed that is the same length. Additionally, if you are not in a rush to buy a new mattress, you can keep track of the many sales and discounts offered.

After reviewing all this, you need to keep in mind that the mattress size preference depends on you. It is ultimately subjective, so deciding the right size might be difficult. The best thing you can do is try out both twin sizes in stores or take advantage of the offered sleep trials. If the mattress size does not fit, or you are just not satisfied with it, you can return it before the trial period ends and get a full refund.
