According to the research carried out by the American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology, 45% of adults in the US occasionally snore, while 25% are habitual snorers. This problem is more frequent in males and gets worse with age. Snoring can be a symptom of severe health issues such as sleep apnea. Most snorers find relief by using anti-snoring mouthpieces, also known as mouthguards. Mouthguards reduce snoring by holding the tongue in place or pushing the jaw forward. These devices are divided into two categories – MADs (mandibular advancement devices) and TRDs (tongue retaining devices). Mandibular advancement devices move the lower jaw forward, while tongue retaining devices, as the name suggests, hold the tongue in place and prevent air blockage.

If you are thinking about buying a mouthguard, there are certain things you should consider. MADs are created individually and molded to the user’s teeth. However, although they are customizable, and can be adjusted, they may cause physical discomfort. TRDs are cheaper and cause less discomfort, but their one-size-fits-all design may not be suitable for some users. Below, you will find our top 5 anti-snoring devices available today. Our choices are based on careful product research and analysis, as well as customer experiences. In order to create this guide, we have consulted with 5 sleep experts and conducted more than 120 hours of research.

ZQuiet (MAD)

Highlights: plastic, non-adjustable, universal design, 30-night sleep trial

This is done by using a hinged design which eliminates the need to push the jaw forward and therefore prevents pain or discomfort typically caused by standard MADs.

Unlike some restrictive mandibular advancement devices, the ZQuiet allows users to breathe both through their nose and mouth. The special design of the product also eases the process of opening and closing the mouth, as well as moving the jaw side to side. Lastly, this product is very budget-friendly. The price is affordable and comes with a backed by a 30-night sleep trial. The product was designed by a dentist, and it’s FDA approved.

Best Anti-Snoring Devices 2018 Buying Guide

As mentioned in the beginning, according to the research carried out by the American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology, 45% of adults in the US snore occasionally, while 25% are habitual snorers. Young adults aged 18-24 years are 25% less likely to snore than older adults. Snoring is more likely to occur to men, and it gets worse with age. There are no proven ways to cure snoring, and most individuals (and their partners) find relief by using anti-snoring devices. These simple devices suppress snoring either by pushing down the tongue or advancing the jaw forward. Most anti-snoring mouthpieces don’t require a doctor’s or a dentist’s prescription and come with an affordable price of $100 or less. Before buying an anti-snoring device, you should learn more about this sleep related condition, as well as how anti-snoring treatments and technology works. We will also cover some considerations you should have in mind when purchasing a mouthguard. Lastly, this guide will also cover our top picks.

How Do Anti-Snoring Devices Work?

We start snoring when the upper airway is restricted. The restriction of upper airway causes a tickling sensation at the back of the throat which as a result produces a harsh and often loud, gurgling sound. Snoring can be caused by multiple factors, starting from obesity to consumption of alcohol or antidepressants. Obesity or being overweight is one of the leading causes of snoring. Excessive skin and fat around one’s throat restricts the circulation in the airway and causes snoring. Cold or allergy related congestion can also cause snoring. Lastly, snoring can be caused due to the consumption of alcohol or antidepressants which make the throat relax.

It is also important to mention that most adults snore due to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by temporary loss of breath during sleep. OSA, as the name suggests, is caused by a physical obstruction in the airway that impairs normal breathing. Due to the condition, the sleeper may experience dozens of breathing-loss episodes per night. Apart from OSA, snoring can also be caused by central sleep apnea. CSA occurs when the brain is unable to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing, and as a result, causes snoring. Sleep apnea is a condition that should be taken seriously because it increases the risk of severe health conditions such as stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.

Unfortunately, there is still no known cure for sleep apnea. Sleep apnea treatment includes using CPAP machines which deliver a steady stream of air to the user, or BiPAP machines which deliver air at variable pressurization rates based on the user’s breathing patterns. Continuous positive airway pressure machines alleviate the symptoms of OSA, while bi-level positive airway pressure machines are mostly used to relieve central sleep apnea symptoms. These machines are very effective in eliminating the breathing-loss episodes that occur due to sleep apnea. However, they are often expensive ($200 is the base price) and require a doctor’s prescription.

Anti-snoring sleep aids can also be used to alleviate sleep apnea, and they are a more cost-effective option that CPAP and BiPAP machines. Anti-snoring mouthpieces are also a hassle-free alternative to standard sleep apnea treatment. These devices should if not stop snoring immediatelly, at least reduce or fix loud snoring.

Stop snoring devices reduce snoring by creating a physical barrier between the soft, vibrating tissues in your mouth and the throat. These mouthpieces and mouthguards can be divided into two categories – MADs (mandibular advancement devices) and TRDs (tongue retaining devices).

Mandibular Advancement Devices

MADs reduce snoring by moving the lower jaw forward and expanding the airway. The mouthpiece presses down the tongue and breathing muscles attached to the mandible. Typically, mandibular advancement devices are molded to the user’s teeth, and many of them come with an adjustable lower tray that can be moved forward or backward. Some products are specially designed to be used with CPAP/BiPAP machines. Mandibular advancement devices are designed to do the following:

  • Stabilize your jaw in the case it recedes during sleep
  • Advance the jaw slightly forward to open the airway
  • Depress your tongue so it doesn’t block your breathing by falling back at the throat
  • Ensure that soft palate tissue doesn’t impair normal breathing

Tongue Retaining Devices

TRDs don’t push the mandible forward but reduce snoring by stabilizing the tongue. Tongue retaining devices expand the gap between the tongue and the back of the throat by pulling the tongue forward. TRDs usually look like clear pacifiers. The tongue fits into an opening at the front, and creates gentle suction that pulls it down and away from the back of the throat. These products don’t require molding according to the user’s teeth and mouth. Most of them come in one size.

In order to meet the standard requirements for medical devices sold in the US, all MAD and TRD pieces must undergo rigorous evaluations and certifications. Before buying a specific MAD and TRD mouthpiece, it is advised to research the certification status of the product. Although some anti-snoring devices can be purchased without a doctor’s prescription, it’s recommended not to use these anti-snoring aids without an approval from your physician. In case snoring persists despite regular use of an anti-snoring mouthpiece, you should also consult with your doctor.

Benefits of Using Anti-Snoring Devices

The biggest benefits of using these devices compared to CPAP or BiPAP machines are low price, non-invasive treatment, no noise, and low maintenance requirements. Let’s take a closer look.

Low-Cost Investment

One of the biggest benefits of using a stop snoring aid is a low-cost investment. When it comes to price, CPAP or BiPAP machines have a base price of $200, and the starting price of standard MAD or TRD models is only $40. Keep in mind that custom mouthguards can be costly, but compared to CPAP or BiPAP machines, they are still more affordable.

MAD and TRD mouthpieces do not require the user to undergo a medical procedure, and most of them don’t require a prescription. Anti-snoring devices are an effective sleep aid, but unfortunately, they don’t work for all people. If you are one of the few that doesn’t get the desired results, it is good to know that you won’t lose your money. Most companies, such as SnoreRx and ZQuiet that sell anti-snoring mouthpieces offer a full refund in case you are not satisfied.

Non-Invasive

Sometimes, the only solution for snoring may be surgery. However, before opting for such invasive treatment, it is better to try at least if some of the non-invasive options help you. Anti-snore devices are entirely safe to use. It is also worth mentioning that an invasive procedure may lead to a variety of side-effects.

The main benefit of using anti-snore devices is that you can always return the product to the seller, and basically try and fail until you find a method that works for your problem. However, this isn’t the case with invasive solutions like surgery, and what is once done cannot be undone. Possible errors or results may have permanent consequences on your lifestyle and health.

No Noise

Unlike CPAP and BiPAP machines which are quite loud, anti-snoring mouthguards produce no noise when being used.

Low Maintenance

Lastly, both MADs and TRDs are very easy to clean and maintain. After every use, all you need to do is to place them in hot water to sterilize the device against germs and bacteria. Also, these devices should be stored in a protective case.

Portable

Unlike CPAP and BiPAP machines, stop snoring devices are very easy to carry. All anti-snoring mouthpieces are portable and come with their own case. They are small and lightweight which is also ideal for traveling. In case you are traveling through security in an airport, bulky CPAP and BiPAP machines may trigger a TSA inspection. Of course, convenience is not the most critical factor when deciding your health, but if you frequently travel (for example for work), this may be an important consideration.

More Energy

As you undoubtedly know, there is nothing better for your health than getting a good night’s sleep. If you have sleep apnea or frequently snore, the quality of your sleep will be disrupted. Waking up refreshed and full of energy is priceless, and anti-snoring devices may sometimes be the solution to get more sleep and wake up every morning revitalized.

Increased Health and Vitality

Many studies have warned us that a chronic lack of sleep can have severe consequences on our health. For example, chronic sleep deprivation may affect your memory capacity, lead to hormonal imbalances and weight gain, and much more. By using a stop snoring aid and improving the quality your sleep, you will also make a positive effect on your overall health. Keep in mind that lack of sleep may make you irritable and more prone to make personal or work-related accidents.

Disadvantages of Using Anti-Snoring Devices

Although these products don’t cause the same level of discomfort as CPAP and BiPAP therapy, MADs and TRDs may cause some physical discomfort, and side effects such as dry mouth and excessive salivation, jaw pain and stiffness.

It is also important to keep in mind that MADs and TRDs are specifically designed to reduce snoring and not to tackle any other symptoms of sleep apnea. Therefore, when it comes to OSA or CSA treatment, CPAP and BiPAP machines are much more effective. Compared to these machines, most anti-snoring mouthpieces have a short life span, because they are designed to be used from six months to two years.

Considerations Before Purchasing

Here are some factors you should keep in mind before shopping for an anti-snoring device. The following section should help you compare brands and different models easier.

Should You Opt for MADs or TRDs?

The first thing you should consider before shopping is if the device is a MAD or a TRD. The choice between the two comes down to your own preferences. If you prefer adjustable mouthpieces, you will most likely opt for a MAD, and if you are looking for a universal size, you will most likely select a TRD model. MADs adjustment rate can sometimes be very specific (for example, from one millimeter to one-sixteenth of an inch. However, there are also some models that don’t mention a specific level of adjustment. Lastly, some products even come with a calibrator that displays the current settings and can be reset to the original settings.

Price

Standard anti-snoring devices are available for $100 or less. However, custom devices can be costly and cost $2,000 or more. If the customized fitting is important to you, it’s better to select a MAD that a one-size-fits-all TRD.

Do You Have Dentures?

Many people with dentures also have problems with sleep apnea. Oral appliance therapy such as MADs can be used to treat sleep apnea and snoring, but the process is rather complicated. The biggest problem for snorers with dentures is that they have no natural attachment points for an oral appliance. However, MADs can be made to work for patients with dentures if they attach with dental implants.

Since sleep apnea is more common among elderly patients, many snorers may already have implants in place. To properly use MADs, they simply need to remove their denture as normal, and replace them with a mandibular retaining device.

When it comes to TRDs, things are not that complicated. Actually, the process is very simple. Since TRDs resemble pacifiers and don’t require attaching the device to the user’s teeth, they can be worn easily by patients with dentures.

Do You Breathe through Your Mouth?

If you prefer breathing through your mouth while sleeping, MADs may be more suitable for you than tongue retaining devices because most models allow you to freely open and close your mouth, move your jaw and similar. Some tongue retaining devices come with tiny holes that allow mouth breathing, but other models may be problematic. Although some TRDs come with perforated holes, some users still find them uncomfortable for mouth breathing.

Do You Have a Problem with Teeth Grinding?

Bruxism can be caused due to many different reasons. However, this condition can often be found in patients suffering from sleep apnea. Researchers believe that teeth grinding in sleep apnea patients occur as an unconscious response to the collapsed airways. By tightening the jaw muscles, you actually unconsciously prevent restrictions of airflow. Good news is that by using MADs, you can treat bruxism and reduce snoring at the same time. MADs have been shown to be effective in treating bruxism no matter whether or not it is caused by obstructive sleep apnea. TRDs cannot be used to treat or prevent teeth grinding.

Is Your Snoring Caused By Sleep Apnea?

These devices are very effective for reducing or completely eliminating snoring. However, when it comes to sleep apnea snoring, this type of device may not suffice. For sleep apnea related snoring, it’s best to use a CPAP or BiPAP machine. Anti-snoring mouthguards, as the name suggests reduce snoring, and are not able to target other sleep apnea issues such as nighttime loss of breath.

Do You Need a Prescription?

Generally speaking, lower priced models and those that have a simple design do not require a prescription. However, more advanced and expensive devices may require a prescription. Before purchasing a model, it is best to research all the requirements carefully, and to consult with your doctor. Based on you’re the cause of your snoring, your doctor may help you select the best anti-snoring device on the market.

Trial Periods

Some anti-snoring devices come with a trial period, meaning you can return the product within a specific timeframe if you are not satisfied with it. Most trials last from 30 to 90 days.

Certification Status

Before purchasing a model, we encourage you to check whether or not the device was certified. In most cases, the certification status of the product can be seen on its packaging or the official website of the company.

Additional Stop Snoring Products and Tips

If a mandibular advancement device or a tongue retaining device cannot reduce your snoring, here are some other stop snoring products, snoring remedies that work as well as strategies and accessories you can use:

CPAP or BiPAP Machines

We mentioned before that CPAP and BiPAP machines are very effective at reducing the symptoms of sleep apnea and snoring. However, this type of treatment may be expensive and uncomfortable to use. Also, you need a doctor’s prescription in order to get one. Another problem is that is you are sharing a bed with someone; they may be bothered by the noise the machine makes. Here are some of the critical details about CPAP and BiPAP machines, and how they alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnea and reduce snoring.

CPAP Machines

CPAP machine is a continuous positive air pressure device that is designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea. It works by increasing the positive air pressure until its prescribed rate, therefore allowing continuous and undisrupted breathing. Average price goes from $200 to $800.

BiPAP Machines

Bi-level positive air pressure devices are specifically designed to treat central sleep apnea. These devices work by increasing and decreasing pressure at variable rates, depending on the user’s breathing. The average price goes from $800 to $1,700.

Non-Mask Devices

If anti-snoring mouthpieces don’t help you and CPAP/BiPAP machines are too loud too expensive for your budget, you may opt for a simpler sleep apnea treatment such as non-mask devices. One example of such devices is Provent. Provent is FDA-approved sleep apnea treatment, and it was introduced by researchers at Stanford University. The Provent features two disposable devices with air filters that are placed inside both nostrils and doesn’t include using a sleep mask or hooking yourself up to a generator. Before opting for such a device, it’s vital to consult with your doctor.

Anti-Snore Pillow – Optimal Pillow Loft

If you have sleep apnea, you should avoid sleeping on your back with your head elevated. To reduce snoring, consider getting a pillow that will put your head and neck in a more comfortable position. Pillow thickness generally has three categories – high, medium or low. Pillow thickness is also referred as pillow loft. High-loft means the pillow is thicker than five inches, medium-loft means it’s thicker than three inches, and low-loft means the pillow is thinner than three inches. When it comes to selecting the right pillow thickness for yourself, you should have the following factors in mind.

Body Weight

If you are a bit heavy, low loft pillows will be more suitable for you. Heavy people sink into their mattress and a low loft the pillow will create a nice barrier between your head and the sleep surface. If you are more light-weight, high-loft pillows may be more suitable because you do not sink deeply into your bed.

Head Size

If your head is larger than average, a high-loft pillow will provide excellent support. When your head size is average or below average, you will find more comfortable using pillows with medium or low thickness.

Shoulder Length

Higher-loft pillows are usually needed for people with broader shoulders, while people with narrow shoulders usually receive enough support from pillows of medium or low thickness.

Mattress Firmness

If you have a soft mattress, you will also prefer using a low loft pillow. A high loft pillow will create an unnecessary large barrier between your head and sleeping surface. However, if you have a firm mattress, thicker pillows may provide better cushioning and support.

Adjustable Bed

If you have a problem with snoring, anti snore adjustable beds may help because they enable you to customize the angle of the mattress at the head and sometimes also at the foot. Lifting the upper part of your bed a bit may reduce snoring and allow you to sleep with less disruption. It’s worth mentioning that some adjustable beds come with anti-snore features, and are specifically designed for snorers.

Most adjustable beds also have remote or app-based controls, and can support at least 600 pounds. However, you should know that these beds are quite expensive and the average price point is from $1,000 to $3,000.

  • Love memory foam. If you prefer feeling like you’re slowly melting into the bed and experiencing a deeper-cradling hug, this mattress has classic features you will enjoy. In addition, Nectar’s design is breathable and helps reduce heat retention, combating the issues of traditional memory materials.
  • Need pressure relief. Nectar delivers great pressure relief to your entire body, as well as in the shoulders and hips, where it is needed most. It contours to curves and reduces pressure, which works wonders for people who tend to sleep on their sides.
  • Are searching for an exceptional value. There are high-quality materials in this bed at a truly affordable price. The brand even provides a full year in its trial period to see if you feel well rested, which translates into overall peace of mind with the purchase.

You May Not Like Nectar If You:

  • Prefer a traditional innerspring feel. Nectar has crafted their memory foam bed to be supportive and comfortable, however, this mattress does not have the same level of bounce that innerspring beds are known for and will have a different feel from them.
  • Have a sensitive nose. Although it should quickly dissipate, there is some noticeable off-gassing, or “new mattress smell” from the materials that are released from this bed when it is first unpacked. This is typical for bed-in-a-box products and will disappear completely in a well-ventilated room within a couple of days.

Materials and Quality

Nectar’s memory foam bed is delivered to your front door rolled up into a bag with handles for easier transport through your house to the bedroom. If you prefer, the company will also arrange an optional White Glove Delivery service to have your mattress professionally unwrapped and installed. This mattress is compatible with practically all foundations, including platforms, divans, boxsprings, slatted frames, and adjustable bases. If you choose, you can buy a foundation designed specifically for Nectar through the company’s website, and this foundation is also covered by a Forever Warranty. The cover is made from durable long-staple cotton and Tencel, an eco-friendly, bed bug resistant fabric that promotes airflow and temperature regulation. It is fully removable, which is great if it needs to be spot cleaned. Quilted into the cover is a 1-inch layer of breathable gel memory foam that gives the top of the bed a luxuriously plush feel that also works to reduce heat retention. On the underside of the cover, there are small bumps that act like little grips to help prevent the mattress from sliding around on its frame, which is especially nice for adjustable base set-ups. Overall, the bed is 11 inches thick with the following layers beneath the gel-quilted cover. The first layer is 3 inches of Nectar’s LushFoam™, a gel memory foam that contours to your body’s curves. The gel helps keep the temperature of the bed regulated.

The second layer is 1.5 inches of Adaptive Hi Core Memory Foam that has a much quicker response time than previous layers and a firmer feel. It helps to support the body’s weight and eases the transition from the comfort layers to the supportive base.

The base layer is 5.5 inches of high-density foam, which the company refers to as a High Vegetable Base Super Core. It provides support to the body and creates a sturdy and durable foundation to the mattress.

Support and Feel

Nectar scored 6 to 6.5 out of 10, with 10 being the firmest in the firmness scale. This places it in the versatile medium range that will accommodate a lot of different sleeping needs and preferences. One of the first things you notice about Nectar is how plush and soft the quilted cover feels while giving you an extra layer of pressure-relieving memory foam. Lying down on the bed, you will feel your entire body slowly sink into the upper layers for a deep hug. These comfort layers are slow responding, unlike the quicker-responding layers at the base. The bottom two layers are noticeably firmer, and the brand has done a nice job of combining pressure relief and comfort with support. It is also important to note that even lighter parts of the body sink in comfortably, creating a nice uniform feel to lying down. Though mattresses that cradle your body can sometimes retain heat, Nectar’s cooling features, like the gel and breathable cover, will help keep you from sleeping hot. As with most memory beds, there is not a deep bounce. Though the foam is slow-responding and there is a deeper hug, you likely will not experience that “trapped feeling.” This can be important if you are a combination sleeper who tends to rotate between sleeping positions or value ease of repositioning. Overall, the balance of firmness in the foams and cradling pressure relief will suit a range of different sleeping preferences and needs. Back sleepers will appreciate this bed’s supportive contouring in their lumbar region while the high-density base foam keeps their spine in alignment. Side sleepers will benefit from the uniform pressure relief. Stress that side sleepers often experience because their weight is concentrated on a smaller surface area will be comfortably relieved in this mattress. Most stomach sleepers will notice how this bed cradles their hips without letting them dip too deep, which is often a source of back pain for stomach sleepers who do not have adequate support. That said, significantly heavier people might want to look at a firmer option to ensure they have enough support.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

Memory foam really shines in the motion transfer category because it has minimal bounce and tends to absorb movement without letting it travel across the bed. This is advantageous for couples who sleep light and want to be able to move around in bed without disturbing their partners. The Nectar excels in the motion transfer category, as expected from the materials used in its construction!

On the other hand, edge support is something you may want to consider if you sleep with a partner and need to occupy a greater surface area. Edge support while lying or sitting on the edge can be important to some people, but not to all. Bed-in-a-box models don’t tend to have edge support as their strong suit, and Nectar is pleasantly surprising when lying down on the edge. It feels supportive and not at all like you will roll out of the bed. However, when sitting on the edge with weight even more concentrated in a smaller space, there is some compression.

Layla Mattress

Copper may not be the first thing you imagine when you are dreaming of a comfortable new bed, but we think it’s a really “cool” addition to memory bed technology. Layla’s unique dual-sided copper-infused memory bed promotes temperature regulation while supplying amazing pressure relief. Our in-depth Layla mattress review showcases a company that places a high value on using copper for its conductivity and supportive features and a brand that backs up their product with a Lifetime Warranty. With Layla, you are essentially getting two for the price of one: Medium-Soft on one side if you want a softer pressure-relieving sleep, or flip it over and try out the Firm for a more supportive feel. This versatile bed and its proprietary gels in the cover and highly conductive copper in the foams can give you the deep-hugging comfort of memory beds with much less heat retention compared to similar brands.

You Will Love Layla If You:

  • Are not sure which firmness level you need. Layla is double-sided, with Medium-Soft and Firm sides. By designing one bed with two firmness levels, you can discover the type of support and pressure relief that suits your body best. The brand provides a generous risk-free 120-night trial period to help you decide if their product is the right fit.
  • Need pressure relief. Medium-Soft side up, this product really excels in relieving pressure along all of your body’s heaviest points with the deep cradling of memory foam. Firmer supportive layers underneath will ensure that your spine remains in neutral alignment.
  • Sleep hot. The cover is infused with the company’s proprietary cooling ThermoGel®, and the first layer of memory foam incorporates copper, a “thermal superhighway.” Both work together to noticeably reduce heat retention, which is often associated with traditional memory materials.

You May Not Like Layla If You:

  • Do not like memory foam. This bed really delivers on all the advantages that make memory products great, including pressure relief and contouring, and has added features to reduce heat retention. However, people who are looking for more bounce and prefer to sleep on the top of their mattress may not appreciate the deep hug of Layla, especially when turned to its Medium-Soft side.

Materials and Quality

Layla is a memory bed-in-a-box option that works with a variety of different foundations or slatted bed frames and is adjustable base compatible. There is a foundation designed specifically for this mattress available through the company’s website. The fully-removable cover has a top that is a polyester/viscose/lycra blend infused with cooling ThermoGel®, which is activated when it comes into contact with moisture. These soft and durable materials are noticeably cooler to the touch. The 100% polyester base of the cover does not have the same cooling properties, so if you flip the bed to the Firm side, you will want to unzip and flip the cover as well. The cover also can be dry cleaned, which is a great feature, and replacement covers are available for purchase through the website. The first layer is 3 inches of copper-infused memory foam for contouring and comfort. Copper, which is both antimicrobial and a highly efficient heat conductor, helps keep the mattress cool and germ-free. In addition, the copper cells in the foam firm up under pressure so that heavy parts of the body receive both pressure relief and additional support from this unique material.

The second layer is 2 inches of convoluted support foam, which resemble what we recognize as an egg crate shape. This layer promotes airflow that helps the temperature of the mattress remain regulated while providing additional pressure relief and support.

The third layer is a 4.5-inch thick foam that forms the mattress’ foundation and delivers Layla’s main source of support for the sleeper. The fourth layer is a 1-inch layer of the same copper-infused foam used in the first layer that provides contouring and comfort when the mattress is flipped over.

Support and Feel

Layla is delivered with the Medium-Soft foams facing up, and we scored this at a 4 out of 10 on our firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest. Flipping it over, the Firm side scored a 7 out 10. On both sides, Layla offers a classic memory bed feel that cradles the body’s curves while providing good support. If you wake up on firmer mattresses feeling pain in pressure points like your hips, back, and knees, you will likely love waking up in memory foam. The pressure relief of this product truly excels, especially on the Medium-Soft side. Like many beds in the memory space, there is next to no bounce. That said, the response time – or the amount of time the foam requires to regain its shape once pressure is released – is relatively quick compared to other memory beds, but does not snap immediately back into place, and your weight is well-supported by the base foam. The Medium-Soft foams really cradle your body in a deep and cozy hug. Either side of Layla will accommodate a variety of sleep positions, however, if you are an active sleeper and ease of repositioning is exceptionally important to you, you may want to try the Firm side for additional ease of repositioning. Most back sleepers should feel comfortable on the bed’s Medium-Soft foams where the additional memory materials will hug the curve of the lower back while the base layer of foam supports good spine alignment. That said, someone who is substantially heavier may sink too deep in the Medium-Soft foams and sleep more comfortably on the Firm. Stomach sleepers will probably prefer the Firm side of this mattress because their hips may sink too deeply into the Medium-Soft side, which can cause the spine to fall out of neutral alignment. Significantly lighter stomach sleepers, however, may be adequately supported by the Medium-Soft side. Side sleepers will feel exceptionally well-accommodated on the Medium-Soft side, which really delivers pressure relief to the hips and shoulders. Side sleepers tend to experience additional pressure because their body weight is concentrated on a smaller surface area. Overall, Layla is a really versatile mattress that can deliver benefits for a wide range of body types and sleep preferences.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

Layla really delivers in motion isolation, where memory foam beds are known to perform extremely well. Jumping or simply getting in and out of bed produces a very minimal transfer of movement from one part to the other.

This is important to consider for couples who sleep light and have different sleeping schedules. You should sleep undisturbed by your partner moving around in this bed.

This bed holds up really well in the edge support category compared to other memory products. There is some compression that is noticeable when you are sitting on the edge, but when lying on the side, you will not feel like you’re going to roll out. This is due to the 4.5 inches of support foam to the acting base layer. If you share your bed, you probably occupy more of the bed’s surface area, which means you will want to make sure the bed’s support holds up, even at the edges.

Nest Bedding Alexander Signature Hybrid

Have you narrowed down your new mattress search to a coil and foam mix? Nest Bedding’s Alexander Signature Hybrid offers an ultra-luxurious, sleek design, and fantastic performance. The brand claims to have “the most innovative copper infused foam on the planet,” as well as a Lifetime Warranty and a Lifetime Comfort Guarantee.

You Will Love Alexander Signature Hybrid If You:

  • Are looking for serious value. This product is brought to you by Nest Bedding, a well-known regional store that has successfully expanded online and sells directly to consumers. Because of their model, they cut back on expenses without having to pay a middleman. When it comes to pure value for money, Nest is hard to beat.
  • Want exceptional support. This well-rounded mattress is not only comfortable, it offers proper spine alignment and pressure point relief. It is especially great for back and stomach sleepers and its strong edges will not roll you out of bed. If you would like to use your mattress for sitting and other activities, you will love the extra support this bed brings compared to traditional memory foam.
  • Need great cooling. One thing is certain – you will never “sleep hot” in this bed. Highly breathable cover materials and a strategically-placed copper-infused foam in a lower level provide one of the best cooling capabilities you will see in any mattress. Innersprings are naturally cooler due to the filling the spaces between coils.
  • Want high-quality foam and coils. With high-density foam and premium coils, you will experience comfort without feeling trapped or sinking so far you fall out of alignment. Nest uses only the highest quality foam for the upper layers that bring the pressure relief and contouring we all love and a deep bounce only found in innersprings.

You May Not Like Alexander Signature Hybrid If You:

  • Want a traditional innerspring sensation. This particular model feels more like a memory foam unit instead of an innerspring mattress. Hybrid beds bring different sleeping sensations than traditional construction, but they also have added features that cause people to shy away from traditional brands.

Have off-gassing sensitivities. Like most products with memory materials, there is a short window of time where the product airs out and has a slight smell. This is over in a matter of a day or two and is to be expected. The bed will be completely odorless afterward.

Materials and Quality

This Nest Bedding model is a hybrid mattress designed to be used with non-flexible bases, such as closely slatted frames, platforms, and adjustable bases. The brand offers their own products on their website. The mattress is compressed and shipped in a box, although you would never be able to tell after the packaging is removed and it fully expands. It is 13 inches thick with durable layers. There are handles on the side panels, which is an amazing feature that we rarely see on mattresses – and they make repositioning their product so much more convenient. The non-removable cover has a natural feel since it is made out of a cotton and polyester blend. It has 1.5 inches of gel-infused memory foam and uses Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric. It is quilted and specifically designed to enhance the airflow for all the foams and to relieve pressure between the bed and the body. The first layer beneath the cover is designed for cooling and comfort. It is 1.5 inches thick, made out of Titanium EverCool foam. The second layer consists of 1.5 inches of copper-infused Energex foam. Since copper is a heat conductor, it pulls heat away from the body and helps keep the surface cooled off.

The third layer is 1 inch of SmartFlow foam. It acts as a transitional layer that helps with support and cooling. The fourth layer is made out of 8 inches of Quantum® Edge pocketed coils. They ensure deep compression support. The fifth layer is a 1.8 pound per cubic foot dense foam to support the levels above.

Support and Feel

The mattress has three firmness levels. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest), you can choose between their Plush at 2.5 to 3, the Medium at 4 to 4.5, or their Luxury Firm at 8.5 to 9.

The medium version reviewed here offers a balanced amount of support, sinkage, and contouring. When compared to other products, there is a shallower sinkage in this model, but it still provides a comfortable contour. To the touch, the top has a premium, soft feel. The quality of the materials is evident. The brand has done a lot to ensure a cool night’s sleep. Not only does the bed have coils (which are very well-known for airflow), but all of the comfort levels have elements that work together to provide cooling. This is something to consider if you typically sleep hot but like memory materials. In addition, coils provide much better bounce than all-foam mattresses, and this model has a plenty of bounce to it. While the memory layer has slower responsiveness, there is a quick responsiveness when the other levels are engaged. By not sinking as far into the mattress, having a relatively quick response time, and high levels of bounce, repositioning can be navigated with ease. We think this bed is especially good for back and stomach sleepers due to the springs that are very supportive and help with spinal alignment. Because there is less sinkage, these positions feel more supported. There should not be any neck/back pain or uncomfortable bowing of the spine. Side sleepers will massively benefit from the top comfort layers, which will relieve classic pressure points in their shoulders and hips. In addition, the springs add proper alignment. If this were an all-foam mattress, we might recommend the Luxury Firm version for significantly heavier sleepers. However, the coils are strong and we feel that this option is very versatile for all weights and sleeping positions. Likewise, significantly heavier side sleepers may consider the Plush option, as it has increasingly effective comfort layers.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

If you toss and turn in bed during the night and have a partner, motion transfer is important to consider. For sleepers who are not easily disturbed, it is not such a big issue. Memory foam beds are the best when it comes to motion isolation. Due to this model’s construction, there is slightly more motion transfer. However, motion transfer is extremely limited and the individually wrapped coils help to isolate it. In combination with the comfort layers, there is relatively low motion transfer – especially for a bed with bounce and coils in it.

The Quantum® Edge coils provide solid edge support while sitting and lying on the side of the mattress. While not everyone uses these positions, good edge support is a selling point for those who do. While there is a little bit of compression in top layers while sitting and lying down, the coil layer is very sturdy. You should feel well-supported along the edge and not roll out (like you can with some foam mattresses).

Casper Mattress

Casper launched in 2014 with the goal of modernizing the sleep industry and has become one of the most recognizable names in the bed-in-a-box industry. Their all-foam bed is one of the most comfortable we have found for the widest variety of sleep preferences. Casper also sells a high-end model, The Wave, and an entry-level model, The Essential, but for this review, we will discuss the original Casper based on our scoring system, which evaluates characteristics like support, pressure relief, motion transfer, and quality.

You Will Love Casper If You:

  • Are a combination sleeper. People who tend to change position should not have any difficulty with the Casper, due to the combination of its quick-responding top and transition layers with a supportive base. The specially-designed foams are also extremely accommodative for all sleeping positions, making this bed a good choice for couples.
  • Want zoned spine support. This brand really goes to work to blend comfort with excellent alignment. Softer foam under the shoulders paired with firmer foam under the hips help to keep the spine straight while you sleep.
  • Sleep hot. Proprietary breathable foams and strategic layering work to promote airflow and help keep this bed cooler than many competing memory beds.

You May Not Like Casper If You:

Want an innerspring feel. The all-foam structure is extremely supportive and versatile for a lot of individuals, but it will feel different from beds that incorporate coil systems.

Materials and Quality

Casper is an all-foam bed that ships straight to your door compressed in a box. As with most all-foam constructions, you will want to use a flat surface, platform, or closely slatted bed frame for best results. Foundations and adjustable bases specially designed for Casper mattresses are available on the company’s website. The cover is made from a durable two-toned polyester with quality stitching that holds well when the fabric is pulled in multiple directions. It is also fully-removable for spot cleaning. Overall, the mattress is 10 inches thick and has four distinct layers. The first layer is 1.5 inches of open-cell proprietary comfort foam that gives the mattress some bounce and breathability to keep the surface from overheating.

The second layer is 1.5 inches of responsive high-density memory foam for pressure relief and motion isolation. Keeping this layer away from the surface helps to keep the trapped heat associated with memory foams away from the body.

The third layer is 1.5 inches of Zoned Support™, a transition layer that is firmer in the center of the bed where your hips are positioned to help with the extra weight that tends to concentrate in this region, but softer around your shoulders and knees, for additional pressure relief. Since your body is getting tailored firmness levels, your spine should remain in neutral alignment.

The fourth layer is a 5-inch layer of dense foam that lends durability, provides support, and creates the overall foundation of the mattress.

Support and Feel

On the firmness scale, Casper scored a 6 out of 10, with 10 being the firmest, which we would classify as a medium level of firmness. Beds in this range tend to work best for couples who have differing sleeping preferences as they more versatile. With this mattress, there is slightly less sinkage than expected of brands with a memory foam layer, which is ideal for individuals who prefer to sleep more on top of their mattress. There is also an average bounce for an all-foam product, which is largely due to the top comfort layer and the base layer. The soft cover gives it a cozy feel. Lying down on the mattress, you should feel as if your weight is evenly distributed. With the Zoned Support™, a firmer transition foam under your hips will keep your spine even with your shoulders. Though you will sink in a small amount for pressure relief and a gently cradled feeling, you will not feel stuck. You will sleep more on top of this bed rather than inside it, which, along with the quick-response top, transition layer, and base, will help you to change positions easily. Also, the mattress’ balance of comfort and alignment make it a versatile choice, especially combination sleepers who tend to switch between positions.

Most back sleepers will appreciate the feel of extra support underneath their hips that keep their spine well aligned. The top comfort layer and memory foam will contour nicely into their lumbar region. Most side sleepers will notice the classic pressure relief of memory foam in the second layer and find that the bed conforms nicely to their curves while keeping their spine in neutral alignment. Side sleepers often experience pressure in their hips and shoulders in this position because their weight is concentrated in a smaller area. Most stomach sleepers need a bed that is firm enough so their hips do not sink too low, forcing their spine into an awkward angle. The Zoned Support™ layer really shines for the stomach position by adding extra firmness where it is needed most. Casper is one of the most versatile mattresses we have looked at, and we really think it will be a great choice for a wide spectrum of people and body weights. That said, different body shapes and sizes will experience a mattress differently. Individuals who are significantly heavier may want to upgrade to Casper’s Wave, that will provide extra support and even more advanced zoning features.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

All-foam mattresses, especially those with some memory materials, really shine in the category of motion transfer because of its tendency to absorb shock and isolate movement. Though there is an average bounce in this bed, it does not travel to other parts of the mattress or create a disturbance. If you have a partner and worry about disturbing their sleep by rolling over, Casper will be a great choice.

Casper’s edge support is competitive with other all-foam mattresses, performing slightly better than expected for a bed-in-a-box. You will notice some compression when sitting on the side with all of your weight concentrated in one spot, but lying down with your weight more distributed, you should feel well supported, even close to the edge. People who with partners want to maximize the amount of surface space they can use, and beds with more solid edges give you more room to move around.

Zenhaven Mattress

Have you ever wanted to try two mattresses for the price and convenience of one? Zenhaven has two firmness levels in one handcrafted mattress – meaning your perfect fit may be one flip away. It is manufactured is by Saatva, a well-known online-only luxury brand. Since the brand offers a 120-day trial period, there is plenty of time to decide which side is right for you, and this product is much less expensive than comparable showroom mattresses.

You Will Love Zenhaven If You:

  • Want a hypoallergenic bed. The natural materials used in Zenhaven will have you feeling good inside and out. Its Talalay latex is resistant to mold, microbes, and dust mites, making it a healthier option than many other brands.
  • Sleep hot. Latex resists body heat. Instead of feeling deeply contorted by memory-style beds that trap heat, latex will support you with a breathable open cell structure. In addition, pinholes and a 1-inch layer of wool further encourage airflow.
  • Want to find the perfect fit. With two levels of firmness in one bed, you can find the side that works best for you. With a 20-year warranty, you can rest assured that you will enjoy the perfect fit for decades to come.

You May Not Like Zenhaven If You:

Want a memory feel. This natural latex bed has more responsiveness than memory foam. However, it also has stronger edge support and stays cooler than traditional memory foam.

Materials and Quality

Zenhaven is a 10-inch latex mattress designed to be used with a solid platform (not slatted bases). Unlike many other online brands, it is not compressed in a box. A quilted organic cotton cover surrounds the bed. There is a natural look to the cotton as Saatva decided to avoid harmful bleaching agents that would have unified the cover’s color. It shows no sign of weakness when tugging or pulling at the top and sides; the stitching is strong. As there are two distinct sides with different firmness levels – Luxury Plush and Gentle Firm – we will break down the layers on the Luxury Plush side, as this is the side used most by owners. The first layer under the cover is 1 inch of 100% organic New Zealand wool. The wool naturally creates a flame-retardant barrier and absorbs and wicks away moisture. In addition, it helps air circulation and temperature regulation.

The second layer is 1.5-inches of Talalay latex that serves as the proprietary “5-Zone Comfort Layer.” This means that there are separate sections with pinhole designs of different densities that work together to promote spinal alignment and comfort. There is added support in the hip and shoulder regions.

The third layer is 3 inches of Talalay latex that provides enhanced support. It is softer than the next level. The fourth layer is 3 inches of Talalay latex that is firmer than the previous level. After flipping the mattress, this firmer layer provides immediate support for those who need it. The fifth layer is 1.5-inches of Talalay latex that makes up the Gentle Firm side of the bed, which is surrounded by wool. It is firmer than the comfort layer on the Luxury Plush side.

It is important to note that the brand is made with American Talalay latex, which denotes the extensive process the latex undergoes as it transforms from a liquid to solid state. The process creates larger cells and airflow than a less-rigorous Dunlop process, thereby helping with increased temperature regulation and mattress breathability. Since the Talalay process is refined, it produces extremely consistent material that is slightly more expensive. All-natural latex, natural wool, and organic cotton come together to form a luxurious experience for the sleeper. The brand boldly claims that their all-natural latex will outlast all other latex based on durability tests, which the length of their warranty stands behind.

Support and Feel

Most people prefer a medium-level of firmness because it accommodates sleepers of nearly every position. This level typically provides a balance of pressure relief and support. As mentioned, there are two different firmness experiences for buyers of this mattress. The brand says the Gentle Firm is 18% firmer than the Luxury Plush. We have rated the Luxury Plush a 4.5 and the Gentle Firm a 7 level of firmness on a 10-point scale with 10 being the firmest. The cotton cover is soft and pleasing to the touch. There is a quick response time after pressing in and releasing. You will lay on top of the bed instead of in it. While lying down, repositioning is easy and there is a slight bounce to each side. Most back sleepers will be comfortable on either side of the mattress due to the proprietary zoning structure. However, they will experience a little more support from the Gentle Firm side, which they may prefer. Side sleepers need to be mindful of having enough pressure relief in the hips and shoulders. Because of this, they will want to try the Luxury Plush side first. The zoning in the second layer adds support to these areas, and there should be adequate pressure relief. Stomach sleepers find added benefit from the Gentle Firm side. It provides more support to the hips and keeps them from sinking into the bed and disrupting spinal alignment. However, most will be comfortable on the Luxury Plush side as well. Significantly heavier back and stomach sleepers may need to try the Gentle Firm side first for additional support so they do not sink too far into the mattress and out of alignment. Significantly heavier side sleepers will want to try Luxury Plush to get the benefits of pressure relief. A huge value in choosing this mattress is the ability to find the firmness level that works best for you. If you decide to try the other side of the bed after delivery, the Zenhaven team will come back to your home and flip the mattress for no additional cost.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

Although not quite as advanced as memory foam when it comes to motion transfer, latex beds tend to perform well. While this is not as important for deep or solo sleepers, it is important light sleepers or those easily disturbed by a partner getting up or repositioning during the night. Zenhaven performs exceptionally well as a latex bed in regards to motion isolation. Even though there is a bit of bounce, the effects are minimally transferred throughout the bed.

Unlike many other online-only brands, Zenhaven is not compressed and shipped to your door in a box. While these brands can offer an enhanced level of convenience, oftentimes they miss the mark when it comes to edge support. There are two types to consider when buying – sitting on the edge and lying on the edge. When sitting on the edge, the Zenhaven performs better than foam mattresses and slightly better than other latex beds we have reviewed (see all of our bed reviews). While lying on the bed, the edge support remains satisfactory. There is minimal compression and you should stay in one place instead of feeling forced out of the bed.

Saatva Mattress

Have you dreamed of purchasing a luxury mattress at a fraction of the cost of in-store models? If the answer is yes, Saatva’s premium beds can make your dreams a reality. The company’s direct-to-consumer model allows them to deliver an exceptional product for less than half the price of similar beds.

Saatva has retailed their innerspring mattresses online since 2010. In addition to their innerspring model, the company sells latex mattresses under the Zenhaven brand and memory foams as Loom & Leaf.

While the company offers three firmness levels, including Saatva Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm, Luxury Firm is their best-selling product and has a medium-level firmness that will please sleepers of almost any position.

You Will Love Saatva If You:

  • Want a classic innerspring feel. With more bounce and airflow than other online brands, you will enjoy a traditional feel that is enhanced with lumbar support. In addition, you will sleep on top of instead of deep in it.
  • Want affordable luxury. More eco-friendly materials and high-end durable construction often comes with a luxury price tag to match, but Saatva manages to keep prices down by using an online sales model.
  • Want quality construction. With strong stitching and materials, you will enjoy it for years to come.

You May Not Like Saatva If You:

  • Like the feel of memory foam. While there is a pillow top, responsiveness is quick and you will not have the sensation of slowly melting into the bed.

  • Want a bed-in-a-box. Saatva is not compressed and shipped in a box delivered to your doorstep, which means you will need to block out a small window of time for their white glove delivery service to arrive. However, the edge strength gained from Saatva’s innerspring model is not often found in compressed boxed models and a big perk to consider when ordering.

Materials and Quality

Saatva is an innerspring mattress that uses foam to enhance its design. It is available in a 14.5-inch Premier Luxury or 11.5-inch Custom Slim height. Both options offer the same feel. The Custom Slim size can take advantage of adjustable bases, which the company has available for sale on their website.

The non-removable cover is made of organic cotton and hypoallergenic fibers. A pronounced design in the quilting gets tighter in the lumbar region to provide more support. The top is soft and plush to the touch.

Overall, the construction is highly durable. When pulling at the bed, the stitches stay strong and intact.

At its core, there are multiple layers that help this brand stand out from the competition. The Euro-style pillow top’s 1.25-inch layer of foam is stitched in under the cover, aiding with pressure relief.

Below the pillow top, on the center third of the mattress, a unique lumbar area has been created with memory foam. It has a noticeably different feel from the rest of the mattress.

Going deeper, the first layer of coils is revealed under a convoluted foam transition layer. There are 884 individually wrapped 4-inch coils in the queen size that create motion isolation and conform to the body.

The lower layer of 416 connected coils are 7-inch steel hourglass-shaped support coils. They prevent sagging and provide support. In addition, the coil-on-coil design helps with air circulation and gives the bed a good amount of bounce. The bed’s edges are encased in a sturdy, thick foam (which is also found on its base) to deliver enhanced edge support and make every inch of the surface usable.

Support and Feel

Most people should find this bed comfortable because it has a medium to medium-firm level of support. A medium-level firmness is comfortable for almost every sleeping position as it balances pressure relief and support, making it an easy choice for couples who need to meet in the middle.

We rated Saatva a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest. Most buyers choose and rave about the Luxury Firm bed we have reviewed today, but there are Plush Soft and Firm options available.

When pushing straight down into the top, you will feel the soft pillow top before experiencing the cradling and support of the springs beneath. There is a quick response time when removing your hand, which is slightly slower when placing your hand in the lumbar region where the memory foam is stored.

The bed has particularly great reviews from back sleepers. The springs and unique lumbar region provide the right amount of support. Hips dip into it slightly to give back sleepers the proper spine alignment.

There is a slight cradling effect when lying on the mattress. It is easy to move around on and no feelings of being sucked into the bed.

Stomach (belly) sleepers will also be comfortable with this brand. They need adequate support so the back will not arch uncomfortably and fall out of alignment. They will find exactly what they need.

Medium-firm beds can be challenging for side sleepers who need medium to soft support due to pressure relief requirement. However, we believe that the Saatva will be satisfactory for most side sleepers.

The innovation in design means that most people, ranging from heavier to lighter, will have their needs met.

Still, the comfort level for each person is different. Significantly heavier and lighter side sleepers may need to consider the Plush Soft option in order to have proper alignment. A softer bed will allow sleepers to sink down further, which will not only provide the right alignment but pressure relief as well.

Significantly heavier individuals that sleep on their backs or stomachs may need to consider the Firm bed option for more support so they will not sink down too far. However, there is little risk of bottoming out in this bed.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

Motion transfer is higher in this bed relative to memory foam beds, which are the best in respect to motion isolation. However, Saatva performs well in this regard when compared to other innerspring mattresses.

While the layer of individually wrapped coils helps to lessen motion transfer, a light sleeper who has a partner may need a different brand.

Saatva blows away the competition in the area of edge support. This is due to its additional layer of firm foam around the sides that provides superior support. When sitting on the edge, there is little sinking into the bed when compared to other brands.

When lying on the edge, sleepers are well-supported. There is virtually no difference in lying on the edge of the bed or the center. If you sleep with a partner and need every inch of space, this is a great feature to consider when buying.

Nolah Mattress

Focused on technology, the founders of Nolah wanted to replace what they saw as outdated memory foam and latex materials. Their 20 years of combined experience in the sleep field led them to creating Nolah Air Foam™, a proprietary material that stays temperature neutral and reduces pressure on hips, shoulders, and backs.

The company claims their new material is “better than memory foam and latex,” which makes for an interesting claim to explore!

You Will Love Nolah If You:

  • Are a side sleeper. Nolah clearly excels in providing the pressure relief you need. The company positions their product as having four times less peak pressure than similar memory mattresses.
  • Worry about harmful chemicals. Nolah’s CertiPUR-US® certification guarantees their product is free from formaldehyde and cancer-causing substances that competitors use in their foams.
  • Enjoy purchasing products that make a difference. A wildlife animal is adopted with each purchase and returned mattresses are donated to local charities. In addition to their environmentally-friendly bed-in-a-box shipping model, you can rest easy knowing you have a product that helps the planet.

You May Not Like Nolah If You:

Are a heavier sleeper. People who are significantly heavier back or stomach sleepers may need to consider another mattress to aid proper alignment.

Materials and Quality

Nolah is an all-foam mattress based on the latest advances in technology. It is made to be placed on a flat surface, such as a platform, box spring, floor, or closely slatted bed.

The trendy two-tone cover is made of natural Viscose fibers that have a soft, plush feel to the touch. The Viscose wicks moisture away from the body and helps to regulate body heat. Besides, the cover zips off for easy cleaning.

Under the cover, there are three foam layers that make up the bed’s 10-inch height. The top layer is made of 2-inch proprietary Nolah AirFoam™. Similar beds on the market are made with latex and memory foam, which the company claims are dated materials from the 1920s and 1970s, respectively.

Their technological research and innovations led to the creation of the exclusive material, which is cooler than memory foam infused with cooling gel. It is 100% temperature neutral. In addition, the brand says that it is more durable than latex.

The second layer consists of 1-inch latex-like support foam. This serves as a transition layer from the top to bottom layer.

The third layer is 7-inch high-density polyurethane base. This sturdy level provides the support and structure of the mattress. Its thickness and density helps to even out the softness of the top two layers.

Support and Feel

A medium-level firmness means that most positions should feel supported and enjoy a comfortable night’s rest. This level of firmness has pressure relief and support, making it great for almost anyone, as well as couples with differing needs.

This mattress has a medium-level firmness. We have rated it a 4.5 to 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale with 10 being the firmest.

It is important to note that Nolah is slightly less firm than others on the market. Overall, Nolah’s construction ensures that you will feel gently cradled but not sink down so far that you are sleeping inside the bed. It will get softer over time, so keep that in mind when buying or taking advantage of the trial period.

While pushing into the top of the Nolah, you will feel the soft Viscose cover and the 2-inch foam layer. The experience is similar to memory foam in feel. The mattress’ responsiveness when pushing into it and releasing is in the middle of traditional slow memory foam and the quick elasticity of latex.

As previously mentioned, Nolah works wonders for side sleepers. The company touts stats about offering four times less pressure on hips, shoulders, and back areas than other beds, which is a top priority for those on their sides.

Back and stomach sleepers will typically find the support they need to be comfortable with their alignment.

However, significantly heavier individuals who sleep on their back or stomach may need to consider another mattress. The bed’s plush feel may not offer the necessary support from sinking into the bed.

If you are considering this brand, it is a low-risk investment due to the 120-day trial period that includes free shipping and pick-up.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

Unlike traditional beds that have inexpensive innersprings and continuous coils, foam and memory beds are wonderful when it comes to motion transfer. Nolah is no exception. There is virtually no motion transfer on this bed.

While motion transfer is not important to everyone, it can be essential to light sleepers with partners or pets. Nolah performs slightly above average to comparable beds in regards to edge support.

As to be expected of foam beds, you will sink down deeper than sitting on innersprings while sitting on the edge. Most of your time will be spent sleeping on the mattress, so this is a minor detail for most buyers.

While lying down on the edge, the bottom layer of polyurethane offers firm support. You will not roll off the mattress, but stay comfortably in place. This is crucial for individuals who sleep on or near the edge.

  • Wildlife Adoption – The company has partnered with Defenders of Wildlife so that one wildlife animal is adopted with every purchase. You can decide which animal to protect while ordering and there are 20 species to choose from, ranging from polar bears to sea turtles. An adoption certificate will arrive in the mail separate from the mattress.
  • CertiPUR-US® Certified – This certification means that the bed contains non-existent/safe levels of certain harmful chemicals that could threaten your safety and the environment.

  • 100% Made in the USA – Beds are made in America without any imported materials.

Brooklyn Aurora

Are you in the market for luxury but don’t think you can find it a bed-in-a-box brand? Are you convinced that you will always sleep too hot on foam?

Veteran brand Brooklyn Bedding has introduced the Brooklyn Aurora as its high-end hybrid that combines coils and foam. With an incredible amount of quality at a fraction of the cost you would pay in a retail store, we really think it stands out among other bed-in-a-box brands, as it has fantastic cooling capabilities.

You Will Love Brooklyn If You:

  • Sleep hot. Brooklyn Bedding has gone to exceptional lengths to incorporate cooling features in multiple layers of the Aurora, and it is one of the coolest-sleeping mattresses we have reviewed. With its special cover technology, the gel and copper infused into its foams, and the temperature-regulating airflow of the coil layer, you are highly unlikely to overheat.
  • Enjoy bounce. If you love the springy feel that only coils can give, you will like the Aurora. It helps with ease of repositioning and is great for bedroom activities.
  • Need pressure relief. The hybrid’s combination of foams gently cradles the body, providing great pressure relief, especially in the hips and shoulders of side sleepers, who tend to experience the most stress in these areas.

You May Not Like Brooklyn If You:

Want an all foam feel.  The pressure-relieving foams of this mattress are supported by a base layer of pocketed coils, which give it a higher bounce that helps you change positions and an improved airflow that allows the bed to sleep cooler, compared to some all-foam brands.

Materials and Quality

The Brooklyn Aurora is a luxury hybrid that is compressed into a box and shipped to your home. The mattress has handles on the side for easy placement and can be used on a variety of foundations including platforms, slatted frames, adjustable bases, and box springs. Foundations especially designed for the brand’s mattresses can be purchased on the company’s website.

The cover’s top is made from a cotton blend with technology that the company calls phase-change thermo knitting, which adapts to your body heat and helps to keep the surface temperature-regulated. It has a soft and luxurious feel that is noticeably cool to the touch.

In total, the hybrid has a thickness of 13 inches. The first layer is a 1.5-inch layer of copper gel Energex™ foam with TitanCool™ technology. This quick-responding layer provides pressure relief that does not overheat because the highly conductive gel helps to transfer heat away from the body.

The second layer is 2 inches of hyper-elastic TitanFlex™, which is the company’s latex-alternative that is extremely strong and will not pose a problem for sleepers with latex allergies. It provides additional contouring with added bounce.

The third layer is a 1-inch swirl visco-elastic memory foam, which forms a transitional layer between foam and support coils and helps to elevate the mattress’ motion isolation. It has a gel infusion for further cooling.

The fourth layer is made from 8-inch Quantum edge pocketed coils that provide edge-to-edge support, durability, and stability. Coils along the sides of the mattress are reinforced for additional structural integrity in the edges. The fifth layer is a 1-inch base layer of foam that forms the bed’s foundation underneath the coils.

Support and Feel

The Brooklyn Aurora scored the Medium option of this mattress at a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest. The company offers two other firmness levels, the Soft and the Firm, which they’ve scored at 3 and 7, respectively.

With a high-end hybrid design, the Brooklyn Aurora really delivers all the best features of both foam and coils, incorporating top-of-the-line pressure relief and support. At 13 inches high, the bed feels substantial and sturdy compared to some thinner models.

The first thing you’ll notice is that the cover is cool to the touch and soft. Lying down, you will notice some sinkage through the first three foam layers that give this mattress a gently cradling cloud-like feel.

Aurora’s materials do not allow you to sink too deep and most are quick responding, so you will not feel stuck. The Quantum coil unit offers a good, deep bounce and support, and hyper-elastic TitanFlex™ adds some additional bounce in the comfort layers. Both the quick response of the materials and the bounce make for easier repositioning.

Back sleepers will benefit from the foam’s contouring in their lumbar region while still experiencing the spine-aligning support of pocketed coils.

Side sleepers, who tend to sleep with their weight concentrated onto a smaller surface area, are particularly prone to pressure in their hips and shoulders, the heaviest points of most bodies. This bed will cradle these points for excellent pressure relief, while the supportive coils will keep the spine well-aligned. Side sleepers who need additional pressure relief may consider trying the Soft option of this bed.

Stomach sleepers tend to experience the most sinkage in their hips, which can create an uncomfortable dip that misaligns their spine. Most stomach sleepers will be well supported by the hybrid’s Medium option, but those with heavier weight considerations may want to try out the Firm option.

Both the height and support features make this hybrid an excellent choice for sleepers who are significantly heavier because there is not as much risk of bottoming out compared to some other bed-in-a-box brands.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

If you sleep with a partner and one or both of you sleep light, you will want to look at a bed’s performance in the motion transfer category.

Brooklyn Aurora performs pretty well with motion transfer and this is owed to the layer of memory foam and the pocketed coils. Memory foam has an excellent reputation for absorbing movement, and wrapping each coil individually helps to ensure that motion does not transfer from one coil to the next. There is slightly more motion transfer than an all-foam or memory foam bed, but that is to be expected of a bed with coils.

The Brooklyn Aurora really excels with edge support, especially when compared to other bed-in-a-box options. An edge-to-edge coil system that is reinforced with stronger coils along the sides helps to ensure your body weight is well-supported whether you are sleeping in the bed’s center or the edge. Even with your weight concentrated in a sitting position, you will feel the strong support of the coils underneath you.

Couples take up more surface space, so stronger edge support can be even more beneficial for partners who need to use a larger area of the bed.

Due to its natural flexibility, breathability, and long-lasting durability, latex is often considered an excellent material for constructing mattresses. It is commonly found in high-end mattresses, which are typically more expensive, and can be implemented in both the top comfort layers and the support base.

Natural latex may be rendered using either the Dunlop or Talalay manufacturing processes. Latex mattresses may also contain plasticizers, petrochemicals and other synthetic materials. Latex mattresses can be beneficial for a wide range of users.

Like memory foam, latex is a great choice for side sleepers because it will conform to your figure and support your body’s natural curves and contours. It also reduces motion transfer, which cuts down on nighttime disruptions for couples who share a bed.

However, not all latex mattresses are created equal. To make sure you’ll be pleased with the feel, comfort, and characteristics of your new premium mattress, know the lingo. For a little help, listed below are the five best Latex mattresses in 2018.

Ultimate Dreams Latex

If you’re looking for a product that will ensure that you sleep cool and provide you with superior comfort all at fair and just price, then the Ultimate Dreams Latex Mattress may be just the product you’ve been looking for.

The Ultimate Dreams Mattress is a great value and offers a variety of firmness levels for the ultimate customized mattress. It’s constructed of levels of polyfoam and latex and is designed to give you the perfect night’s rest. It is a ten foot long, queen size mattress that can fit one person or a couple with ease.

The Talalay latex and high density constructed base foam make this an extremely comfortable buy at a great, affordable price. You could easily spend far more money for a mattress that does a lot less. If you want a mattress that is just as firm or soft as you want it without spending far too much, the Ultimate Dreams mattress will likely be a good fit for you.

You Will Love This Mattress If You:

  • Want quality on a budget. We believe this is a solid pick for a budget mattress because it provides an affordable alternative to high-end brands while maintaining the same benefits. The company’s family-owned factory allows for less expensive production, which they graciously pass along to their customers.
  • Enjoy a typical memory foam feel. The layers are designed to work together to hug the body and provide a deep level of comfort. Those who want a classic memory feel should find fulfillment with this brand.
  • Need motion isolation. Memory brands tend to perform the best in this area and this one is no exception! Light sleepers who have trouble on innerspring beds should look into this option for a better night’s sleep.

You May not Like This Mattress if You:

  • Prefer an innerspring feel. There will be a distinctly different feel to this Dreamfoam mattress when compared to an innerspring model since it is made with foams and gel instead of coils.

Materials and Quality

This is a memory foam bed that is compressed, roll-packed in a box, and delivered to your door.

It is designed with a solid base for support. This includes a platform, wood foundation, or slatted bed with 3-4 inches between each slat. Dreamfoam also offers metal foundations that are designed to work well with their products.

The terms of the foundation are important when testing out the 120-night trial period or utilizing the warranty. This model has an updated look from its previous version. The two-toned cover is made from four-way stretch cotton knit.

There are three layers that make up its 12-inch height.

  • The first layer is 1.5 inches of 4-pound gel memory foam. The brand claims that the gel found in this layer helps keep sleepers 33% cooler. This is good news since typical memory foams trap in heat, which can create uncomfortable warmth throughout the night.
  • The second layer is 2.5 inches of 4-pound memory foam. Its function is to relieve pressure while providing support. It is an effective transition layer between the top and base levels.
  • The third layer is an 8-inch polyurethane foam base. This layer provides effective support under the comfort layers.

After unpacking, there should be minimal off-gassing, meaning that the model probably will not have much of an odor after expanding.

Support and Feel

Its true, medium-level firmness provides versatility to cater to nearly every sleep position. The durable cotton cover is soft to the touch. When pushing into the mattress and releasing, there is contouring and slow responsiveness. It has minimal bounce when compared to hybrid and innerspring mattresses.

Because it has a true medium feel, it should work well for a variety of sleep styles. Whether you’re a combination, side, stomach, or back sleeper, you will likely find yourself contoured without sinking too deep into the bed or falling out of alignment.

Back sleepers will likely find that the medium-level of firmness provides a balance of comfort and support.

Side sleepers should feel the immediate benefits of the memory layers, which will help to relieve their concentrated pressure points at the hips and their shoulders.

Stomach sleepers should have enough support so their hips stay in alignment and they maintain a neutral spine.

Heavier sleepers may experience further contouring, which is something to consider when thinking about temperature regulation. This is because the further down you sleep in a bed, the harder it may be to stay cool. Luckily, the cooling gel was put in the top comfort layer with this in mind.

The brand offers a wide selection of other products if you need even more pressure relief, support, or durability.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

Memory beds are often viewed as the best in the industry when it comes to motion isolation, which includes this model. If you are a light sleeper that does not sleep alone, you may want to look into memory beds such as this one.

Light sleepers should not be disturbed by typical nighttime interruptions, including a partner getting in or out of bed or repositioning, as well as pets milling about. When shopping for a mattress, you might want to consider two types of edge support and how they can enhance your experience. There are two types of support to pay attention to – sitting on the edge and lying on the edge.

It is widely known that memory beds do not typically perform well in this area as hybrids and innersprings do. However, this particular quality is not often a deciding factor in purchasing. There are a few inches of noticeable compression when sitting on the edge of the bed. While lying down on the edge, there is additional compression, but the base layer helps to keep sleepers in one place.

Avocado

What if you could buy a mattress and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time? And go to bed each night with the assurance of a chemical-free, all-natural night sleep?

Avocado launched their bed-in-a-box into the eco-friendly mattress space in 2016, and they are aiming for an environmentally conscious sleeping experience at an affordable price compared to other all-natural brands.

Avocado is a hybrid that blends a traditional innerspring feel with the elevated comfort features of foam. Each layer was engineered with durability and sustainability in mind and can be purchased with or without a Euro-style pillow-top, depending on your sleep preferences.

You Will Love this Mattress if You:

  • Want an eco-friendly bed. From the cover to the coils, this bed comes with several environmental certifications, such as GREENGUARD Gold and OEKO-TEX®, which are both industry-independent organizations that evaluate products to ensure safe levels of hazardous materials. This hybrid is made from upcycled steel, sustainable natural latex, natural New Zealand wool, and certified organic cotton.
  • Want a traditional innerspring feel. Most people are familiar with the feel of traditional innersprings, and Avocado’s coil layer provides a similar sensation with an additional foam comfort layer on top. The comfort layer and individual pockets around coils help isolate movement and elevate the traditional innerspring design to an even more comfortable and luxurious feel.
  • Have higher weight considerations. The thickness paired with the firmness of this mattress makes it a great choice for sleepers with heavier body frames. Also, the zoned coil system provides reinforced strength in areas where the body tends to be heaviest, helping to ensure the spine remains in alignment.
  • Have a sensitive nose. With its commitment to all-natural materials and handcrafted construction, this bed comes straight out of the box with no noticeable off-gassing, an industrial chemical smell sometimes associated with recently unpackaged bed-in-a-box brands.

You May not Like This Mattress if You:

Are on a tight budget. Built with premium, natural, and certified organic materials, Avocado has a slightly higher price points than some bed-in-a-box brands that use inorganic materials. However, we feel that this brand is competitively priced as a hybrid design for the quality of materials used in each of its layers.

Materials and Quality

The Avocado is a hybrid that is compressed, shipped, and delivered in a box, and the mattress includes two heavy-duty handles on each side for ease of installation and positioning. It works on a variety of frames and bases, including adjustable, and the company recommends a sturdy foundation due to the mattress’ weight. Professional installation, also called White Glove Delivery, is also available for an additional fee for most sizes, but it is included free-of-charge with the delivery of King and California King sizes.

The cover is an organic cotton that is soft and breathable. Under the cotton is natural Joma Wool® that is sourced from New Zealand. This material wicks away moisture and helps with temperature control. In addition, wool is naturally antimicrobial and resistant to dust mites.

Button-tufting using wool yarn rosettes goes all the way through the mattress from top to bottom, effectively sewing all the layers of the bed together. Many bed-in-a-box brands bind their layers together using an adhesive, which can add harmful chemicals and break down over time. Using tufting increases the mattress’ durability because it reduces the chances that the layers will come loose or begin to bunch up over time.

This product measures at 11 inches high, but it can be purchased with an optional fully-attached pillow-top – sometimes called a Euro-style top – that incorporates an additional 2 inches of comfortable Dunlop latex underneath the bed’s cover, bringing the height to 13 inches.

The first layer is made from 2 inches of 100% Dunlop latex, which is sourced from natural, sustainable Hevea Brasiliensis trees in Asia and is processed with no additional chemicals. This all-natural material is more heat resistant than other traditional foams and aerated to increase airflow, which ultimately helps with cooling.

The second layer is made from individually pocketed 8-inch upcycled steel coils. These coils are arranged in zones that use three different gauge wires of varying diameters, which are tailored to the pressure points and support requirements of the shoulders, hips, spine, and knees.

The base layer is 1 inch of the Dunlop latex that is a higher density than the latex used in the second layer, which makes it slightly firmer. The perimeter is reinforced with stronger coils to provide additional edge support.

Support and Feel

With the pillow-top, Avocado scores between a six and a 6.5 out of 10, with 10 being the firmest. Please note that without the pillow-top, this mattress will feel a bit firmer, probably around a 7 out of 10.

When you push down on the bed, you will notice an almost immediate response time and good bounce that comes from the latex foam and innerspring layers. Sleepers should not have trouble moving around on this mattress throughout the night.

Because the coils are zoned, sinkage varies depending on where pressure is applied. Coils in the center are stronger to accommodate the heaviest parts of the body, usually centered around the sleepers’ middle. The latex foam offers good contouring, but you won’t experience the same deep hug you feel with layers of traditional memory foam, even with the enhanced pillow-top version that includes an additional layer of latex.

Overall, this bed can accommodate most sleeping positions, but it is exceptionally suited for back and stomach sleepers. Back sleepers will experience the tailored support of the zoned innersprings while receiving pressure relief in their lower spine from the contouring of latex foam.

Stomach sleepers also will feel supported by the strong steel coils and higher-density foam layers in this bed, which can help maintain healthy spine alignment even for heavier individuals.

The combination of steel coils and medium-firm support latex make for a very supportive bed overall, but side sleepers may opt for the pillow-top in order to get the pressure relief they need in their knees, shoulders, and hips, especially if they are significantly lighter than average.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

The Avocado with pillow-top performs well with motion transfer. This is owed to the thick layers of latex and individually pocketed coil system. Unlike some traditional innerspring brands where coils are interconnected, pocketed coils compress individually, ensuring that motion transfer is minimal from one coil to another.

Overall, most sleepers, except those who sleep very light, should not have a problem sleeping with partners in this bed, with or without the pillow-top. The coils in the Avocado provide edge-to-edge support that includes specially reinforced coils along the perimeter of the bed. The extra reinforcement on the sides gives it exceptional performance in this category.

Sitting on the side of the bed, your weight will be almost immediately supported by the reinforced steel innersprings that give this bed a very sturdy feel. There is some normal compression in the top comfort layers. If you sleep close to the edge of this bed, your weight will be well supported without any of the instability that can occur with some all-foam designs.

Nest Bedding® Hybrid Latex

Nest Bedding’s Alexander Signature Hybrid offers an ultra-luxurious, sleek design, and fantastic performance. The brand claims to have “the most innovative copper infused foam on the planet,” as well as a Lifetime Warranty and a Lifetime Comfort Guarantee. There are also Plush and Luxury Firm options available through the company’s website.

If you would like to use your mattress for sitting and other activities (such as for sex), you will love the extra support this bed brings compared to traditional memory foam.
  • Need great cooling. One thing is certain, you will never “sleep hot” in this bed.

You Might not Like Alexander Signature Hybrid if You:

  • Want a traditional innerspring sensation. This particular model feels more like a memory foam unit instead of an innerspring mattress. Hybrid beds bring different sleeping sensations than traditional construction, but they also have added features that cause people to shy away from traditional brands.
  • Have off-gassing sensitivities.

Likewise, significantly heavier side sleepers may consider the Plush option, as it has increasingly effective comfort layers

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

If you toss and turn in bed during the night and have a partner, motion transfer is an important factor to consider. For sleepers who are not easily disturbed, it is not such a big issue.

Memory foam beds are the best when it comes to motion isolation. Due to this model’s construction, there is slightly more motion transfer. However, motion transfer is extremely limited and the individually wrapped coils help to isolate it. In combination with the comfort layers, there is relatively low motion transfer, especially for a bed with bounce and coils in it.

The Quantum® Edge coils provide solid edge support while sitting and lying on the side of the mattress. While not everyone uses these positions, good edge support is a selling point for those who do. Although, there is a little bit of compression in top layers while sitting and lying down, the coil layer is very sturdy. You should feel well-supported along the edge and not roll out (like you can with some foam mattresses).

PlushBeds Botanical Bliss

Have you been looking for a more bouncy alternative to memory foam? Do you want your next bed to be more organic?

PlushBeds believes they can offer the healthiest and most comfortable mattresses on the planet because of their dedication to sourcing only the highest-quality organic materials and they are constantly innovating to provide the best fit for individual sleep needs.

This model is available in three different firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Medium-Firm. You may also choose your preferred thickness: 9 inches, 10 inches, or 12 inches. This review is focused on the Medium 10-inch mattress, which should be the most versatile and accommodative.

You Will Love Botanical Bliss if You:

  • Want bounce. These quick-responding latex layers have a lot of bounce both at the surface and base level that helps with repositioning, so you should not ever feel like you are stuck. Unlike some innerspring beds, this bounce remains localized and should not disturb your partner.
  • Prefer an eco-friendly mattress. This product has received environmental certifications, such as OEKO-TEX® and GREENGUARD Gold, which means the materials have been rigorously tested for harmful levels of dangerous chemicals. The cotton, wool, and latex meet global third-party standards for organic materials.
  • Sleep hot. Latex does a great job resisting body heat, and PlushBeds has aerated the layers in this model for even more airflow. They have also included a breathable cotton cover and layer of wool that wick away moisture.

You Might not Like Botanical Bliss if You:

  • Are on a tight budget. This mattress was built with a lot of premium natural materials, including certified organic latex, cotton, and wool, and it costs substantially less than comparable beds in the retail space that have this amount of natural materials. PlushBeds’ latex line does include the Natural Bliss and the Eco Bliss, if you are looking for a slightly lower price point.

Materials and Quality

Botanical Bliss is a latex bed-in-a-box that is built to order and delivered to your door from the company’s factory in California. The King and California King sizes may arrive in two separate boxes due to weight restrictions and require some assemblage.

Because of the mattress’ weight, the company strongly recommends only stable, flat surfaces, like platforms or slatted frames, with no more than 2 inches between the slats. This bed’s elasticity is suitable for adjustable frames, and you can order sizes Queen and above split so that each side may adjust independently or be customized to different firmness levels.

The cover is made from GOTS certified organic cotton that is circular knit for an added elasticity and breathability that stretches with you and wicks away moisture. It is also fully-removable, which makes it easier to spot clean. This review is for the 10-inch Medium mattress, but there are different comfort levels and thicknesses available that will change up the dimensions and specifications slightly.

The first layer is a 1-inch thick layer of 100% New Zealand Wool that provides moisture wicking (it can absorb 30% of its weight in water without feeling wet) and breathable temperature regulation while being naturally resistant to dust mites and mildew. Wool is also an all-natural flame retardant.

The second layer is a 3-inch 100% Natural Talalay Latex Comfort Layer that is an aerated latex that was processed to have a lighter consistency, which works well for contouring and pressure relief. Its immediate response time and bounce ease repositioning, and the material is naturally resistant to mold, mildew, and dust mites.

The third layer is a 6-inch ARPICO Organic Latex Core that is also aerated but poured using the Dunlop process, which produces a denser foam that is elastic enough to relieve pressure while still providing solid and more durable support. ARPICO is one of the world’s leading providers of all-natural latex, known to produce quality product straight from rubber trees and free harmful additives, such as carcinogens, dyes, and pesticides.

Support and Feel

On the firmness scale that scores mattresses between 1 and 10, with 10 being the firmest, the 10-inch Medium Botanical Bliss scored right in the center at a 5. A mid-range firmness tends to be the most popular because of its versatility and ability to accommodate different sleep styles. If you prefer something softer or firmer, this model is available in two other comfort levels: Soft and Medium-Firm.

The cotton knit cover is soft to the touch and just pressing on mattress’ surface, you immediately feel the Talalay’s springiness beneath the wool layer. Climbing into the bed, you will notice how plush and quick-responding the comfort layer is and how it conforms to your curves without hugging you tight like traditional memory materials can.

With latex, softness often correlates with sinkage, and latex layers that are softer will cradle you deeper than latex layers that are more firm. With the Medium firmness of this model, you can expect a gently cradled feeling that will relieve your pressure points but should not make you feel stuck.

Because you sleep closer to the surface, more of your body is exposed to the air, which helps keep you cool. The naturally breathable foams have also been aerated and topped with breathable cotton and wool to wick away moisture and promote temperature-regulating airflow.

Moving around on the surface should not be difficult because of latex’s natural bounce and the denser support layer. Combination sleepers, who like to alternate between sleep positions, will enjoy the versatility of the Medium. Back sleepers will feel the comfort layer conform to and support their lumbar region while the supportive base layer holds their spine straight. Why is that important for them? Find out here.

Most side sleepers, who commonly develop the most pressure points because they sleep with their weight concentrated on a smaller surface area, will enjoy how the comfort layer conforms to their curves and relieves pressure (find out how the mattress type affect them here).

Stomach sleepers need a bed with good support to keep their hips from sinking too low and holding their spine at an awkward angle. Most should be comfortably supported by the Medium, but those needing extra support, especially those with heavier midsections, may find the Medium-Firm is a better fit (or you can browse through our top picks here).

Everyone’s body is unique and experiences firmness differently. If, after you have received your new mattress, you feel like you have chosen the wrong comfort level, the company will work with you for 100-days to swap out layers until you find the perfect fit.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

In general, foam beds perform better in this category than innerspring mattresses, and memory beds typically score the highest. Though not as adept as traditional memory foam, the all-latex Botanical Bliss does an excellent job isolating motion. Light sleepers who share their sleep space with a partner who changes positions a lot should sleep undisturbed in this bed.

Bed-in-a-box brands do not typically excel in this category, but the Botanical Bliss performs slightly better than industry expectations for all-foam mattresses. When you sit on the edge with all your weight in one spot, you can expect to compress through the comfort layer to the support foam beneath. Lying on the side, you should not experience any difference in support compared to lying in the middle.

Zenhaven

It shows no sign of weakness when tugging or pulling at the top and sides, the stitching is strong.

    • Free Mattress and Foundation Removal. The white glove delivery team will remove up to two pieces at no extra cost.
    • Natural Materials. While not all parts of the bed are made from 100% natural materials, there are many natural materials in the Zenhaven. Talalay latex, wool, and organic cotton are in the different levels of the mattress.
    • Hypoallergenic and Antimicrobial. The bed is naturally mold, microbe, and dust mite resistant.
    • Made in the USA

Down Alternative Comforter Buying Guide

After reviewing our top recommendations for down alternative comforters, it is time to take a look at their most important aspects in general.

Types of Fabric Used

The material of a comforter is what determines the comfort and feel you have when you are sleeping. However, there is a wide range of material choices, and it can be challenging to decide which one you prefer without trying it out. Although we cannot help with that completely, what we can do is show materials that are considered the most comfortable. Keep in mind that this is just an overview of the most popular materials and that the choice ultimately depends on your personal preference.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic material. Because of the non-allergenic fibers, it is an excellent choice for people who suffer from allergies. Even though polyester fills are not as breathable as natural-fiber fills, they have exceptional durability and affordability. However, polyester can be uncomfortable during warmer seasons as it tends to trap moisture and heat.

Primaloft

Primaloft is a high-end synthetic fabric that was created to imitate the performance of down. Even though it is warm and lightweight, it is also water-resistant due to the treatment applied to it during production. If it gets in contact with water, it won’t lose any loft, a problem that is common for down.

Gel fiber

Another type of down alternative is gel fiber. It uses gel-infused fibers that help retain heat, but comforters made from it are often warmer than basic models with polyester materials.

Cotton

Since cotton is a natural material, known for its softness and comfort, products made from it provide exceptional breathability, excellent temperature regulation, and comfort. Since it is a natural fiber, it will remain cool when it comes in contact with your skin. It also has excellent moisture wicking abilities and breathability. As it ages, it gets softer and more comfortable, but it also wrinkles and shrinks if washed often.

Silk

Silk is a natural and breathable material that is as soft as down, but it requires dry-cleaning since it can stain easily. It is excellent for both winter and summer seasons, and allergy sufferers as well. It is also costly, delicate, and without the insulating power that down has. Lighter silk models are more suitable for summer with about 200 grams per square meter (gsm), while heavyweight models provide more warmth during the winter periods with around 400 gsm.

Wool

Wool is a natural fiber with hypoallergenic properties and is an excellent option for individuals who have sensitive skin or suffer from allergies. It provides softness and warmth, but at the same time, it also wicks away moisture, gives moderate body temperature, and resists smells and bacteria. However, it is expensive and not always machine-washable.

Fill Power

Fill power is the main attribute of both down and down alternative comforters that you need to consider. It represents the number of ounces of down used, and it is also the primary driver of warmth. If the fill power is 400 or less, there is limited warmth and less loft, but from 400 to 599 the comforter will offer better heat retention and more warmth that is not suitable for colder periods. The fill power between 600 and 799 is for all-season models or higher-end winter products because the loft will trap heat and make sure you have a cozy sleep environment. With more than 800 fill power, the comforter will have serious insulation and loft, but it will also be too hot to use for summer.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Down is a great fill material that gives the comforter serious warmth and softness, all in a lightweight size. However, it’s not perfect. As we said, it has some severe limitations, which can also be said for its alternatives. By nature, down alternative comforters are warm, cozy, and luxurious. They can be used during all seasons of the year, depending on the construction. Let’s take a look at various pros and cons of these products that can help you understand them better.

The most significant advantage is the price. Down, especially higher quality down is expensive. Even the models that are considered to have a lower price still fall out of the budget for most customers. However, down alternative models with the same value are available at a much lower price.  They are also hypoallergenic, while down products can still be the cause of allergies for some people. Unlike down, down alternative is easier to maintain. They are not as delicate as down, so they can be machine-washed and dried without any risk of damaging the material. However, warmth is where alternative materials fall short. Natural down is warmer, but down alternative models pack in more substantial content in more significant quantities to make up for this. The biggest disadvantage is short lifespan (and it is even lower with low-quality models).

T&N Mattresses offer great support and comfort for lightweight individuals who sleep on their stomachs, backs, or side, those who prefer firmer beds, and couples. GhostBed mattresses also provide exceptional support and comfort for lightweight stomach, back, or side sleepers and people who like firmer surfaces with proper body conforming. It is also an excellent option for hot sleepers.

In 2012, Tuft & Needle was established by two Silicon Valley software engineers. Initially, they launched with a singular product, which remains their premier offering now – the T&N Mattress. This medium firm (6) mattress features both a comfort layer and a support core constructed from polyfoam.

The GhostBed is slightly newer. They started working in 2015 as a division of industry veteran Nature’s Sleep. The idea was to simplify the mattress shopping experience and make it better by removing the middle man – the salespeople in the showroom. Their flagship model differs from the T&N model. It is also a Medium Firm (6) bed and support core made of high-density polyfoam. However, the comfort layers are made of gel memory foam and synthetic Dunlop latex.

These are not the only models these companies offer. Tuft & Needle has the Mint Mattress with a polyfoam support core of high density and gel polyfoam comfort layer, while the GhostBed has the mixed-foam model GhostBed Luxe with a phase-change top layer.

Both brand models are similar in terms of firmness setting, construction, and pricing. They also have unique attributes that offer advantages and disadvantages when compared to other brands.

Quick summary

T&N Mattresses offer great support and comfort for lightweight individuals who sleep on their stomachs, backs, or side, those who prefer firmer beds, and couples.

GhostBed mattresses also provide exceptional support and comfort for lightweight stomach, back, or side sleepers and people who like firmer surfaces with proper body conforming. It is also an excellent option for hot sleepers.

Mattress Specs

T&N Mattress

The Tuft & Needle mattress is a Medium Firm foam mattress with a 6.5 firmness setting that is good for back pain. It is very inexpensive with a price of $595 for a Queen size. With 72 lbs, it comes with a 120-month warranty and a 100-day sleep trial and free shipping.

The bed’s cover is made from soft polyester that will flow smoothly through the mattress and help with temperature regulation. The comfort layer consists of three inches of Tuft & Needle’s polyfoam that provides little bounce, quick response to pressure, and functional mobility that won’t let the person sink into the bed or be stuck in a heat trap. This model will keep its shape and durability even if it has lots of wear and tear. Body and environmental temperature can affect your sleep, and due to T&N’s minimal body heat absorption, you will be able to sleep relatively cool during the night. Some have claimed the bed sleeps very hot, but the overall rating doesn’t imply temperature neutrality is an issue.

The base layer below is made of 7 inches of high-density polyfoam that gives the bed its sturdy shape and keeps the sleeper properly positioned during the night. Body-contouring is good, but heavier individuals might not feel comfortable because it only has two layers. The bed’s motion is excellent, and even though it has no memory foam, it does minimize movement to a great extent, making it suitable for couples.

The durability of the mattress is excellent, and many have claimed that the model performs decently, with the expected lifespan being from six to seven years. The model has excellent conforming with targeted pressure relief and above-average pain relief. The edge support is minimal, and sinkage around the edges can happen. It’s silent when weight is applied, with moderate off-gassing that will disappear quickly after purchase.

GhostBed

The GhostBed Mattress is a Medium Firm foam model that is good for back pain. It is 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale and comes at an affordable price of $895 for a Queen size. The 89 lbs bed comes with free shipping, a 240-month warranty, and a 101-day sleep trial.

The bed’s cover is made from a combination of viscose and polyester. It is pretty stretchy, and won’t wrinkle up during the night. It has excellent airflow that ensures proper temperature regulation. The comfort layer is made from 1.5 inches of latex foam that has some bounce and a quick response to pressure, so it will keep the sleeper from feeling trapped in the mattress. The latex also absorbs and disperses body heat to prevent the person from sleeping too hot.

Even though memory foam usually traps body heat, the gel infusion in this model will draw it away from the sleeper. In combination with latex, it will provide exceptional contouring to the body and prevent excessive body heating in bed. At the end of the bed is a base layer made from 7.5 inches of high-density polyfoam that gives the bed its support, and durability. The durability of the mattress is excellent, but it has been sold for less than four years, so long-term performance can’t be evaluated yet.

The model has excellent conforming with great pressure and pain relief. The bed isolates motion to some extent, but less than the average foam-latex mattress. It is not particularly bouncy or responsive for sex. The edge support is better than what most memory foam and latex models have. However, sinkage around the edges can happen. It is silent when weight is applied, and off-gassing rarely occurs. It emits little to no odor, which is very uncommon with memory foam models.

Prices and Sizing

When it comes to prices, both model can be purchased at an affordable cost. Latex models are commonly considered the most expensive mattresses on the market, but with the use of synthetic latex, the GhostBed is an exception.

Both GhostBed and Tuft & Needle models are available in all six sizes. The prices for twin sizes are $350 for GhostBed and $445 for Tuft & Needle, while the twin XL are $395 and $620. Looking at the twin bed prices, the Tuft & Needle is much cheaper, and the same goes for other sizes too. The Full-size bed costs $495 for GhostBed and $770 for Tuft & Needle. The prices for the Queen are $595 and $795. The price of a King size and Queen size for Tuft & Needle is the same – $750, while the GhostBed price for Queen size is $975 and California King $995.

Mattress Construction

Each model has a different material composition, firmness, and thickness. The firmness level for T&N model is Medium Firm 6.5 and for GhostBed Medium 6, while the thickness is 10″ for the Tuft & Needle model and 11″ for GhostBed. They also differ in weight, with the T&N Queen size having 72 pounds and GhostBed 89 pounds.

The Tuft & Needle comfort layer consists of Polyfoam, while the GhostBed model has comfort layers of memory foam and Synthetic Dunlop Latex. The support core for the T&N is made of  7″ HD polyfoam, and the GhostBed core is made of 3″ polyfoam. Both beds have covers made from polyester blends. The GhostBed has a blend of viscose and polyester, while the T&N model has rayon and polyester.

Sleep Position Ratings

The T&N Mattress has only two layers, but it provides close conforming and provides pressure relief to individuals of all weight groups. Its medium firmness provides quality pain and pressure relief, regardless of the sleep position. It is also an excellent choice for those who sleep hot on foam models. The GhostBed is slightly firmer than T&N, with its Medium Firm (6) setting, making it great for those who weigh more than 130 pounds.

Individuals in the lightweight group will sleep good on their side or back, and okay on their stomachs on the GhostBed. However, side and stomach sleepers with less than 130 pounds may not experience the full conforming benefits of the Tuft & Needle. Stomach and back sleepers in the average weight group will sleep good on the Tuft & Needle and very good on the GhostBed. However, side sleepers with average weight will sleep very good on the T&N and worse on the GhostBed. Side sleepers and stomach sleepers in the heavyweight group will sleep well on both brands, but back sleepers will be more comfortable on the Tuft & Needle.

Delivery, Warranty, and Sleep Trials

Most important aspects of shopping are delivery, warranty and sleep trials. We will now take a look at what both models offer.

Tuft & Needle has a non-prorated warranty that lasts 120 months, with a 100-day sleep trial. They will coordinate mattress pickup and cover all associated costs for refunds. You can return the bed anytime during this period and get a full refund only if it was ordered from Tuft & Needle or Huckberry. Purchases placed elsewhere may include additional fees. However, people in Hawaii and Alaska won’t get a refund for shipping costs.

The warranty is entirely non-prorated – with all shipping charges covered by Casper. This warranty covers surface indentations and sagging 3 or more inches in-depth, along with physical flaws that caused the foam to crack and split. However, if the product is not used with a firm, solid foundation surface, the warranty will be voided. The same goes if the product is taken outside the U.S. The warranty is offered only to people who buy the mattress from Tuft & Needle or authorized retailers and it can’t be transferred.

Customers receive the product within seven business days after placing the order. The Standard UPS delivery is free of charge, but you can pay $50 if you want it shipped the same day. The product is compressed and shipped. However, free delivery is only available for those in 48 states, not for Alaska and Hawaii, and the cost of same-day delivery is the same for all locations. Tuft & Needle does not have the option for old mattress removal.

GhostBed has a partially prorated warranty that lasts 240 months, with a 101-day sleep trial. The sleep trial begins when the product is shipped, and it has a mandatory 30-day break-in period. It means that customers won’t get a full refund until they test it out for 30 days. Only those who bought the bed directly from GhostBed can get the sleep trial. Products that were purchased on Amazon will only have the site’s standard 30-day trial.

It comes with a partially prorated warranty that lasts 20 years, which means you have to pay a certain percentage of what you originally paid for the mattress if you want it repaired or replaced. In the first ten years, GhostBed will cover repairs and replacements for a defective mattress, but after ten years owners will need to pay a prorated fee for replacements. All shipping charges (that come with model repairs or replacements) will fall on the owner to pay. On top of that, these prorated charges will increases by 5% with each year of ownership. And the bed’s cover is covered for one year only. The warranty covers 1″ or more in-depth sagging or indentations of the sleep surface, along with physical flaws that cause materials to split or crack when in proper care and use.

Customers will receive the product within three to five business days after the order is placed. All deliveries are made through FedEx. The standard delivery is free of charge for anyone living in the contiguous U.S. Those who live in Alaska and Hawaii have to pay a delivery fee. Changes to the order cannot be made when it is processed, and individuals who want to cancel the order will have a 15% restocking fee. Also, just like T&N, there is no option for old mattress removal.

Recommendations

Both mattresses offer a range of benefits and downsides, and it is up to you to consider all of them carefully to find an adequate model. Here are some of our recommendations that might help you choose.

You should choose T&N Mattress if you need a firmer model with decent conforming. It is suitable for any sleeping position, but individuals with at least 130 pounds will find it more comfortable than those in the lightweight group. Also, it is greatly suitable for people who get awaken easily because of movement or noise, and couples. People with less than 130 pounds who are looking for a Medium bed that has close conforming should consider getting GhostBed.

Many sleepers won’t see the difference, or they will notice a slight distinction in the look and feel of these types of tops. Both products are great for individuals who need extra padding.

Euro-tops and pillow-tops represent extra padding layers stitched onto the top of the mattress. Despite the differences in their construction and look, the terms often get used as if they are the same. This leads to confusion about how to distinguish between the two.

Euro top vs. Pillow top: What’s the Difference?

Innerspring mattress types can accommodate different sleepers and preferences, but we now have a variety of options to choose from depending on the manner of sleeping. Back sleepers need firmer beds, although their choice is more extensive compared to other positions. Side sleepers need a slightly softer bed, which means they should opt for an innerspring mattress with a pillow-top made from foam or latex. Stomach sleepers need a medium-firm surface that provides softness and support.

Even though some researches indicate that regular innerspring mattresses can be as soft or firm as the ones with pillow-tops, there are some advantages to choosing the latter one. Traditional innerspring models do not isolate the movement, so you will feel every turn your partner makes. Memory foam pillow-tops are good at reducing motion transfer. You can also choose their level of firmness, which is not possible with traditional innerspring mattresses. However, the ones made of memory foam tend to trap heat, so some people should opt for breathable materials in the top layer.

Furthermore, additional layers of padding may add height to a bed thus making standard bedding hard to fit such mattress models. Mattress manufacturers rarely make a difference between the terms pillow-top and euro-top, but the difference is in their construction and appearance. Both terms refer to extra layers of cushioning on the top of the mattress. These layers can be made from different materials, such as wool, fibers, gel, latex foam or memory foam and are very comfortable for back pain. They also relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders.

Pillow-tops are usually found on innerspring models, but they can be used on other types of mattresses as well, such as memory foam or latex. Pillow-tops have one layer of foam or fiber padding and are sewn onto the surface of the bed, which leaves a gap between them and the mattress, and they give a sense of thickness to the naked eye. Euro-tops have layers made of denser foam or fiber materials, they are thicker, located under the cover and are in line with the mattress edges.

Euro-top should allow more comfort since it cannot shift or lose shape being stitched under the cover, whereas pillow-top is prone to moving and wearing out over time. As pillow-top is practically thinner and made of softer material, the mattress under that layer can be felt by a sleeper, and it provides uniform firmness of the whole surface. Euro-top is created to provide a soft layer in the center and firm feel at the edges. Pillow-top is less durable since it is thinner and tends to lose shape in time, mainly because it is often made of lower quality foam. Euro-top has shown more durability, given the fact that it is made of denser material and more than one layer, but it is prone to sagging at the edges.

As regarding the price, apparently, there is no difference in prices, as they vary depending on manufacturers and mattress types. The material composition, support core construction, and layer construction are what influences the price for both euro-top and pillow-top.

Breakdown – Pillow-Tops vs. Euro-Tops

Many sleepers won’t see the difference, or they will notice a slight distinction in the look and feel of these types of tops. Both products are great for individuals who need extra padding.

Pillow-top has distinct layering, and euro-top has uniform stacking. Both products have foam or fiberfill construction, and the thickness of 3 inches with the gap for pillow-tops and no gap for euro-tops. Pillow-top offers a balance of cushioning and firmness, while the euro-top gives firmness at the edges and cushioning at the center. Pillow-tops can flatten over time and lose cushioning, while euro-tops last longer and are prone to sagging at the edges. The cost for both varies depending on the manufacturer and the model.

Top 3 Pillow-Top and Euro-Top Mattresses

The market is filled with euro-top and pillow-top mattresses, but some stand out from the others. We have chosen the top 3 models that differ from their competition.

Saatva Mattress

Features

  • Euro-top under the cover made of organic cotton
  • Multiple firmness options
  • Recycled coil-on-coil system
  • Multiple height options
  • 120-day sleep trial
  • 180-month warranty

The luxury Saatva mattress with a Euro topper has a very reasonable price. The top layer of the  is plush, but underneath it is a dense memory foam that wraps a coil-on-coil construction. This innerspring design has individually pocketed springs above the coil-on-coil system.

The Euro-top provides a uniquely cushioned feel, but the coil-on-coil system gives excellent body contouring, edge support, and spinal alignment. The specialized construction has upholstered filling materials. This model aims to prevent sagging that can happen over time. It also has a more substantial (13″) gauge steel unit that will provide exceptional support for the bed, with a comfort coil unit (14.5″ gauge) located at the top that gives an excellent blend of healthy and balanced support. The upper part is made of individually wrapped and pocketed comfort coils that will contour to the body, even when you change position.

The Saatva mattress also comes with a 180-month warranty and 120-day sleep trial. You can also get free White Glove delivery with the option of having your old bed removed and a new one assembled at no cost. If you want to get a mattress pad, it would be best to use an all-cotton pad, because it allows excellent airflow. However, pick one with a minimal amount of padding, because Saatva beds were designed to provide the proper amount of cushioning. And with the two coil unit that is inside an organic cotton cover, it wouldn’t be right to use any type of synthetic in your cover that can disrupt the airflow of the whole bed.

All Saatva mattresses are handcrafted in the United States and are made from recycled steel coil and bio-based foams, with an organic cotton cover. They are designed to last 10 to 15 years with normal usage, and you can choose between three comfort levels: Firm (‘Firm’ or 7.5), Luxury Firm (‘Medium Firm’ or 6), and Plush Soft (‘Medium Soft’ or 4). You can even choose a  height – 11.5” or 14.5”.

Avocado Green

Features

  • Available with and without the pillow-top
  • Organic Dunlop latex
  • Joma wool cover
  • Pocked coil spring base
  • 300-month warranty
  • 100-day sleep trial

The Avocado Green Mattress is a very versatile and sustainably organic model. It can be purchased in two firmness options – with the pillow-top is a Medium 5 and without is a Medium Firm 6. All models have a GOTS organic certification that confirms everything is made organically.

Under the Jama wool cover is a latex layer with pocketed support coils. The latex used in this model is natural Dunlop made from green and organic materials. This latex and coil combination provides edge support, great pressure relief, and motion isolation.

The Avocado mattress is shipped compressed in a box. The delivery is free anywhere in the United States, with Alaska and Hawaii included. The bed also has a 300-month warranty with a 100-day sleep trial. And because it is made  from organic cotton and Dunlop latex, it is very durable with a lifespan of at least at least 7-8 years.

WinkBed

Features

  • Euro-style pillow-top
  • Multiple firmness options
  • Lifetime warranty
  • 120-day sleep trial
  • Handmade

Underneath are two layers with gel that are two-zoned with individually pocketed coils and tempered layers of microcoils which provide contouring, pressure relief, and excellent support. There is also a lumbar layer that gives additional support, prevents misalignment and sagging. The whole bed is wrapped in a stretchy and cooling Tencel lyocell cover.

The model is compressed and put in a vacuum-sealed box. It is made in Wisconsin and the delivery is free anywhere in the U.S. It also has a lifetime warranty with a 120-day sleep trial.

When shopping for a mattress, individuals often find themselves overwhelmed by the vast array of factors and characteristics to take into account. The cost is usually the first thing that catches one’s attention, followed closely by the mattress’s appearance. However, the durability of the mattress and the level of support it provides are also crucial considerations. Once a shopper is happy with these initial aspects, it’s smart to shift focus to the less evident but important attributes. Although the size of the mattress might seem like an obvious detail, it generally becomes a consideration only after the shopper is content with both the cost and the quality of the mattress.

Depending on who is making the purchase, size can be a significant limiting factor. Larger mattresses tend to cost considerably more, and it may not be possible to fit them every size in your bedroom. Some manufacturers offer size customizations and unique size options, but that’s not what you normally see on the market. Out of the main six size options (Twin, Twin XL, Full/Double, Queen, King, California King), we will focus on two in this article – Full/Double and Twin XL. Hopefully, by the end, you will know enough about these two sizes to choose what fits the best. We will look into both sizes individually before making comparisons and conclusions. Let’s get into it.

The Pros and Cons of Twin XL Mattresses

Twin XL stands for Twin Extra Long, which means these models boast solid length. While a standard twin-sized bed is around 75 inches long, the XL version is five inches longer, at 80 total. It has the same width as a normal twin-sized model, clocking in at 38 inches wide. Compared to a king-sized model, twin XL has the same length, but exactly half the width, making them ideal for tall single sleepers. It can be quite difficult for two people to share a single twin XL, as the width doesn’t support it.

Twin XL comes with several noticeable benefits. For one, they’re much easier to fit into a room than full/double mattresses, despite being five inches longer. A single twin XL takes up roughly 3,120 square inches, 930 square inches less than most full/double mattresses, which measure in at 4,050 square inches. If you’re scrambling to find space in your bedroom, a twin XL might be the more suitable size of the two.

Because XL models are overall smaller than full/double beds, their price point is often less scary. In most cases, the price difference ranges between $50 and $350 in favor of the XL mattresses. Depending on the brand in question, you may find XL models that cost the same as a full/double version.

If you’re taller than 6’3”, the twin XL should be much more appealing. Full/double options may be double the width, but their length may not be comfortable for a taller person. Twin XLs are also often the cheapest size option that still supports taller sleepers.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, however. Twin XLs have a handful of downsides that may scare some people off, but it’s worth getting informed about them. For example, while a twin XL is perfect for people up to 6’7” in height, you lose around 16 inches in width compared to a full mattress, and if you’re someone who prefers extra space to move around, XL models leave something to be desired. On that same note, XL mattresses are definitely not couple material, because they don’t have enough room for two people to position themselves comfortably. Another concern is the potentially limited availability. Twin XLs aren’t super difficult to find, but they’re considerably less common than full/double mattresses, so you may need to invest extra effort.

The Pros and Cons of Full/Double Mattresses

Full-sized (or double-sized) mattresses are the choice of people who prefer a wider sleeping surface. Measuring in at 54 inches wide by 75 inches long, these beds have plenty of space to maneuver around and establish a comfortable sleeping position. They’re one of the most versatile yet affordable size options, and as such, they’re used in a variety of establishments, such as hotels, hostels, hospitals, and college dorms. A subtle advantage here is that because they’re so widespread, you know what you’re getting in advance in terms of size, as long as you’ve spent at least one night at a hotel or something. Still, there are benefits and disadvantages to look into here, so let’s examine these sizes.

The main advantage of owning a double-sized mattress is the extra width you get that you wouldn’t have with a twin XL. If you tend to toss and turn during the night, this extra space can be a valuable selling point. It’s also usable as a short-term bedding solution for couples, although the width still isn’t enough to let both sleepers move around freely. Not only that, but full/double mattresses can be found almost anywhere, and this accessibility makes them easy to try and popular among the general public.

The downsides should be obvious at this point, especially compared to the twin XL options. Full/double mattresses almost always cost a bit more, and while the price doesn’t suddenly skyrocket into crazy unaffordable territory, the extra $50-350 can make all the difference if you’re on a tight budget.

While full-sized models are much more suitable for couples than twin XL ones, they’re still not ideal. It can be manageable if both of you sleep just fine without lots of room to move around, but people who prefer extra space for their limbs may find it hard to adjust. If your choice is narrowed down to these two categories due to budget constraints, full/double mattresses are still superior.

If you’re tall (hovering around 6’4” or taller), full/doubles may not be suitable for you, as your legs might end up hanging, which can be uncomfortable. In those situations, a twin XL is a better option, especially if you’re single and don’t need to share your bed with anyone.

Which One Should You Go For?

Now that you understand all the necessary things about mattress sizes, we can ask the right questions. Which size you end up selecting can depend on a number of preferences and situational factors, and we will go through them one by one to help you find what fits you best. The questions you should be asking look something like this:

What Is Your Body Type?

Personal comfort is possibly the single most important factor when it comes to choosing a mattress, and in this case, you want to match the size of your bed to your body type. While a twin XL can support people of various weight levels, it doesn’t offer much space to stretch out in. A full/double size is often great for large-bodied sleepers, but the decreased length can be a dealbreaker for taller individuals. It comes down to a trade-off between length and width in this situation.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend?

Money doesn’t grow on trees, and you may end up being forced to purchase an inferior model simply because it is more affordable. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck, however – you often still have a choice between sizes, as neither one of these size options ends up costing more than $800. The larger a bed is, the more likely it is to be expensive. Be warned – if a mattress comes with a suspiciously low price, that often means costs were cut somewhere during production. Be careful when making your purchase, and if possible, try out every model that interests you.

What Is Your Preferred Sleeping Position?

Not every sleeping position demands the same amount of space. Back sleepers tend to position their body in a way that justifies narrow mattresses because their arms are often close to their chest and stomach. Stomach sleepers often have to improvise when it comes to limb positioning, so they may want the extra space that a full/double provides (assuming they’re not too tall for one). Side sleepers often want the most space, as they tend to spread out their arms and legs to achieve optimal comfort. In their case, a full/double mattress might be more appropriate even if they’re tall, depending on how much extra width they want.

Do You Sleep Alone?

The sad truth when it comes to these mattress sizes is that they’re not couple-friendly. If you frequently sleep with another person in the same bed, then a twin XL mattress is especially ill-suited for your needs. While full/double mattresses aren’t ideal for couples, they’re the better option of the two. To a lesser extent, the same applies if you have pets that like to jump into bed with you regularly. Full/double mattresses help you avoid feeling cramped unless you’re too tall for them.

How Big Is Your Bedroom?

Many people have more possessions in their home than what their space can comfortably support. When it comes to picking a mattress, the overall size in square inches can be a deciding factor if your room lacks space in some way. Twin XL mattresses are longer but thinner, and take up less space overall. However, you may find that you don’t have room for a bed that long, in which case a full/double mattress is better.

In this guide, we look into similarities and differences between full/double and queen sizes, to help you make a less stressful and more informed decision once you decide it is the time to get a new mattress.

Full/Double Size Analysis

Full size beds are usually 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. It is a middle between standard twin size that is 39 inches wide and 75 inches long, and queen size that is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. It is most commonly used in commercial accommodations, such as dorm rooms, healthcare facilities, and double bed hotel rooms.

Pros of full/double size beds:

  • They require less space, as they are a little bit shorter and thinner than queen size. If you have a somewhere smaller bedroom, and you don’t plan on sharing your bed, this might be the right choice for you.
  • They are usually less expensive. There are few exceptions, but double size beds are generally $100 to $400 less cheap than the same model in queen size. Another thing that will save you some money is the fact that the sheets and mattresses are also cheaper in this size. Although the price varies by model, brand, and mattress type, double size beds are a good fit for those who don’t want to spend the extra money and are solo sleepers.
  • It has additional sleeping space for a single person. If you are not satisfied with how much room twin and twin XL mattresses offer, or you tend to toss, turn, or sleep in a starfish position, full size bed can provide you with that comfort.
  • Full size mattresses are widely available, so no matter what model or brand you pick, it should be available in this size.
  • The double mattresses are lighter and easier to move. They weight around 80 pounds, which makes it easier to move and maneuver them without additional help, unlike the queen size which can be somewhat trickier.

Cons of full/double size beds:

  • They are designed for a single sleeper, so if you plan on sleeping with your partner, know that this size is not fit for you.
  • They are too short for taller people and measure around 75 inches in length. That can be a problem if you are 6’3” or taller, and you don’t want your feet to hang outside the bed.
  • They can be too small for larger rooms. If you have a spacious bedroom and you put a full size bed in it, it might look out of proportion. If space is not the problem, maybe go for a larger size, and that way you’ll also have more room for a potential sleeping companion in the future.

Queen Size Analysis

Queen mattresses are the most popular ones, and they account for 40% of all mattress sales. Queen is considered an industry standard, and the manufacturers often use this size for display and default prices on their promoting product pages. You can find hotel rooms with a queen size bed universally around the country.

Pros of queen size beds:

  • It’s spacious, measuring 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. If you are a single sleeper and you don’t feel like the full size mattress is enough, this is the right size for you. It is also suitable for couples that don’t require to much space, or for people who are sleeping with their children or pets. They all like to curl up in bed, and if this is the case for you, it’s nice to have some room for comfortable cuddles.
  • Almost every mattress on the market is available in queen size.
  • It measures 80 inches in length, which is more than double size, making it suitable for even taller individuals who are 6’7” and shorter.

Cons of queen size beds:

  • They require a bigger bedroom. If you go for this one, keep in mind that your bedroom should be at least nine feet wide and eleven feet long for a queen size to fit comfortably. Always measure your room when you are buying a new bed, and if it’s smaller than this, maybe you should consider getting a smaller model.
  • They are more expensive. The average queen size mattresses cost from $800 to $1200, which makes them $100 to $400 pricier than the full size models. If you are on a tight budget, you can always look around for sales around holidays when their price is drastically reduced.
  • They are a bit heavier and weight from 80 to 100 pounds. While this is not the problem for some people, others might find them too heavy to maneuver or move on their own, and they might require assistance.

How to Decide What Size is Right for You?

There are several questions to ask yourself before deciding:

Are you a solo sleeper or do you share a bed with your partner?
This is very important when buying a new mattress. If you sleep alone, you need less space, so going for a smaller bed seems like a reasonable option. However, if you are sleeping with your partner, anything less than a queen is not suitable for couples. Even queen size is only right for those couples that don’t take too much space; otherwise, it might seem cramped.

You want to keep in mind that buying a new bed or a mattress is a somewhat long term investment. We change only a few beds in our lifetime, and the average lifespan of a mattress is somewhere around 7 to 8 years. Consider your lifestyle changes in the future, so even if you are a single sleeper at the moment, that can easily change. If you are frequently moving, you should consider getting a smaller size, as they are lighter and easy to move, and they can also fit in most bedrooms.

How much bedroom space do you have?
Whether you live in a small apartment or a large house, your bed should fit comfortably  in your sleeping space. Other larger pieces of furniture can take up a lot of space in your bedroom, so if this happens to be the case, going for a smaller model might be appropriate. You also want to account the layout of the room, the position of the entrance, windows, closet doors, and if the bigger size doesn’t seem to fit with all of these factors included, go for the smaller one.

Even though it doesn’t seem like there is too much of difference between full and queen sizes, everybody with a smaller bedroom know how important those several inches can be. These are the standard mattress size and the appropriate square footage of a bedroom:

  • Twin: 2925 sq. in./ 20.3 sq. ft.
  • Twin XL: 3120 sq. in./ 21.7 sq. ft.
  • Full/Double: 4050 sq. in./ 28.1 sq. ft.
  • Queen: 4800 sq. in./ 33.3 sq. ft.
  • King: 6080 sq. in./ 42.2 sq. ft.
  • California King: 6048 sq. in./ 42 sq. ft

Do children or pets frequently share your bed?
Children can get scared during the night, and they might want to crawl up in your bed. If you are a pet owner, you know that your furry companions love cuddling up next to you until they fall asleep. Double size mattress means less room for everyone, so if you know your bed will be occupied, maybe a smart idea will be going for a queen size mattress. Children grow quickly, and cosleeping with them may become a little cramped. For everyone to get a good night sleep, you need a comfortable bed with enough space for everybody.

What is your usual sleeping position?
Sleeping position can be a huge factor when deciding between full and queen size mattress. Whether you prefer sleeping on the side, back, or stomach, your bed should provide you enough room to achieve this position and turn around if needed comfortably. If you are sharing a bed, consider their needs and sleeping position as well. You both might like to sprawl out, turn around and change positions during the night. In that case, extra width and length can be crucial for a good night’s rest.

Another factor to take into consideration is your body size. While double beds can support most people, some heavier individuals might have a problem. Also, keep in mind that if you are over 6’2” tall, you should go for a queen size so that your feet are not hanging from the bottom of your bed.

What is your sleeping budget?
For most shoppers, the decision usually comes down to the price. Double size models are generally $100 to $400 cheaper than queen size ones, so those on a tighter budget may go for this option.

Since mattress shopping is a long term investment, you shouldn’t settle down for a lower quality model. Start saving ahead of time, and search for retail sales around the holidays. You can also get a reasonable price on a less known brand without sacrificing quality. Once you’ve decided on what size you want, put the budget into an equation, and find the perfect mattress for both your needs and pockets.

The Bottom Line

Full/double size mattresses are suitable for single sleepers who are not over 6’2” tall, and like a little additional space that standard twin doesn’t provide. While they are not ideal for couples, they are perfect for guest rooms and temporary residential places such as motels and dorm rooms.

On the other hand, queen size beds are great for single sleepers who are a little bit taller, but not over 6’7”, and they require even extra sleeping space. They can also be a good fit for couples who like snuggling during the night and don’t mind a narrow sleep surface.

Of course, these are all subjective parameters, and the best way is to go to a shop and to check what size suits you best. Most of the retailers provide a free sleeping trial, where you can return your mattress if it doesn’t feel good during the initial trial period. The trial period can last up to 90 days for some manufacturers. Keep in mind that your bed should offer you excellent lumbar support and that it plays a huge role in musculoskeletal pain you might feel after resting inappropriately. Read up the online reviews, consider all of the mentioned factors, use that free trial period, and you’ll get your perfect mattress.
